WESSLING EARNS OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE ALL-NEWCOMER ACCOLADES
November 20, 2013
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Madison Wessling, a freshman on the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team, was honored as one of seven members of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer team for 2013. The league’s postseason accolades were announced at a banquet tonight held on the eve of the OVC tournament.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Wessling becomes the 11th Skyhawk to capture OVC All-Newcomer honors and the fourth player to earn the award under head coach Darrin McClure.
“I’m really proud of Madison – she has worked hard this year,” McClure said. “Originally we were going to redshirt her this season but when she got the opportunity to play, she really took advantage of it and did a nice job playing multiple positions for us. I am very excited about her future.”
Seeing her first full-time action on Sept. 24 at Alabama A&M, Wessling immediately became one of the team’s best offensive weapons. The 5-10 outside hitter made her presence felt in a big 3-2 win over OVC West rival Southeast Missouri on Oct. 1, slamming down a career-best 17 kills to go along with a .282 attack percentage in 39 attempts. That would be the start of seven double-digit kill performances, all of which came against OVC competition.
Wessling recorded three straight matches with double-figure kills in mid-October and followed that up with three double-digit kill efforts in the final four matches of the season. She hit a career-best .364 (10 kills against just two errors) in 22 attempts against Austin Peay on Nov. 8, as she hit over .200 on nine different occasions.
Overall, Wessling tallied 113 kills in 45 sets (18 matches), finishing second on the team with 2.51 kills per set. She also ranked second on the team with a .216 hitting percentage in 310 attempts and led the team in kills in five different matches.
