November 19, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team conducted its annual fall Soybean Series, with the SkyPilots winning the series by a 2-1 margin over the Pacers.
The SkyPilots, managed by head coach Brad Goss, won the first two games before the Pacers – managed by assistant coach Eric Ebers – avoided the sweep with a comeback victory in Game 3.
The SkyPilots took Game 1 by a 6-4 score. Taylor Douglas was the star for the SkyPilots, driving in four runs at the plate – including a three-run homer in the sixth inning – and earning the victory on the mound with two innings of relief. Stu Jones picked up the save for the SkyPilots with a scoreless ninth inning. The Pacers led 3-0 early thanks to two home runs off the bat of Zack Malone but were limited to one run over the final six frames.
In Game 2, the Skypilots overcame a 1-0 deficit through five innings to post back-to-back four-run innings in an 8-7 win. Douglas, Fletcher Johnson and Max Balter each scored two runs apiece for the SkyPilots while John Skubina earned the win after tossing two innings in relief. Jacob Nantze reached base four times and scored three runs, Brent Morris had three hits and Taylor Cox homered to lead the Pacers offensively.
The Pacers salvaged a victory in the series with a 7-6 win in a seven-inning contest. The SkyPilots led 5-2 after the second inning thanks to a three-run homer by Isaac Carrel but the Pacers battled back to tie the score at 6-all after six innings thanks to yet another round-tripper by Malone. The eventual winning run came in the top of the seventh when Jack Jones drew a bases-loaded walk to score Chase Young. Chris Ross then delivered a shutout seventh to earn a save and clinch the victory for Chris Roe, who came out of the bullpen to throw two innings.
