MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will wrap up its first appearance in the prestigious Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 16 when it plays host to Quinnipiac of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Tip-off from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Skyhawks (1-1) are coming off two games over the opening weekend. With UT Martin winning the season opener against Georgia State, 84-80, the Skyhawks were set for a quick turnaround as they flew to Washington for a matchup with No. 25 Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon. The Zags proved to be too much as the Skyhawks fell 91-54.
Senior guard Jasmine Newsome comes into the WNIT matchup sitting on 1,989 career points. With 11 points on the afternoon, Newsome can become just the second UT Martin basketball player to ever join the 2,000 point club. Teammate Heather Butler (2,137) is currently the only player to ever accomplish the feat as she pushes toward the all-time Ohio Valley Conference scoring mark.
The Skyhawks picked up their first OVC weekly honor as freshman Tiara Caldwell was named the league’s adidas OVC Freshman Player of the Week after her debut weekend. Seeing action in her very first Division I game, Caldwell flirted with a double-double in the Skyhawks season opener against Georgia State by tallying nine points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Caldwell followed that up with a team-high 13 points against Gonzaga, marking the first time that a post player has led the team in scoring since Feb. 12, 2011.
The Bobcats (1-1) are coming off a 30-win season and their first NCAA tournament appearance. Despite losing two-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year to graduation in 2013, Quinnipiac boasted one of the toughest team defenses in the nation in 2012-13, being named the NCAA Division I Statistical Champion for turnover margin.
Quinnipiac defeated North Carolina A&T, 77-63 on Saturday, before traveling to No. 5 Louisville with a second round matchup on the line. The Bobcats would put up a valiant effort, but would eventually fall to the NCAA national runner-up, 100-82 on Monday night.
