BOULDER, Colo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team drained a dozen three-pointers this evening at Pac-12 member Colorado but the Buffaloes pulled away late in the second half to post a 91-65 win.
Four different Skyhawks knocked down three 3-pointers apiece tonight, as UT Martin hit 12 treys in a game for the first time since Dec. 22, 2009 at Florida State. Terence Smith and Marshun Newell (game-high six assists) each went 3-for-6 from downtown and tied a game-high with 15 points for UT Martin. Dee Oldham (3-for-10 from three-point range) scored 11 points while Bobby Jones (3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc) added nine points in 15 minutes off the bench for UT Martin, who won the turnover battle (12 to 18) for the second straight game.
Josh Scott scored 15 points to lead Colorado (1-1), who received votes in both national preseason polls. The Buffaloes also received double-figure scoring outputs by Wesley Gordon (13 points), Spencer Dinwiddie (13) and Xavier Johnson (12).
UT Martin led for a majority of the first half, thanks to a hot start by Smith. The 6-4 redshirt junior scored UT Martin’s first eight points – capped off by back-to-back three-pointers – to give the Skyhawks an 8-4 lead less than two minutes into the contest.
Another jumper by Smith at the 15:49 mark of the first half gave UT Martin a 14-8 lead but the Buffaloes answered with an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the game with 12:39 to play in the half.
Tobias Dowdell converted a jumper on the Skyhawks’ next possession to tilt the score back in UT Martin’s favor and Newell followed with a trifecta to make the score 20-16.
After a Justin Childs bucket at the 8:35 mark extended the Skyhawk lead to 24-21, Colorado scored 14 unanswered points over a span of 5:29 to go ahead until a Jones three-pointer ended the run.
Three-pointers by Jones and Oldham on back-to-back possessions sliced the Skyhawk deficit to single-digits (41-33) with 1:34 to go before Colorado took a 45-35 lead into the halftime break.
Smith’s 10 points led all scorers at the half, as UT Martin shot an even 40 percent from downtown (6-for-15) in the first 20 minutes. Dustin Thomas had nine points off the bench to lead the Buffaloes.
Colorado would lead by 14 points with 17:51 remaining in the game but the Skyhawks fought back thanks to the hot hand of Oldham. The sophomore out of Lebanon, Tenn. swished three-pointers on two straight possessions to make the score 56-49 with just under 13 minutes remaining.
However, Colorado came back with a 7-0 run to go ahead 63-49. Jones canned a three-pointer at the 7:42 mark to make the score 67-56 but the Buffaloes went on an 18-2 run to essentially put the game out of reach.
The Skyhawks play their third straight road game to begin the season on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Arkansas State. Tip-off time from the Convocation Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
