SKYHAWK WOMEN'S HOOPS SET FOR WNIT SECOND ROUND MATCHUP AT GONZAGA

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will make the program’s first ever trip across the country when they matchup against nationally ranked Gonzaga in the second round of the Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament. Tip-off from the McCarthey Athletic Center is set for 4 p.m. CST.
Both teams come into the matchup winners of their season opening contests in the WNIT first round. The Skyhawks are coming off of an 84-80 win over Georgia State. In a game which saw 14 lead changes and a game-high six point lead for both team diminish, it was the Skyhawks who came out victorious in the waning minutes of action. Both teams shot a blistering percentage from the floor, shooting over 48 percent each.
Senior guard Jasmine Newsome picked up right where she left off last season, scoring 24 points to go with a career-high 12 assists. Newsome led a cast of five Skyhawks who tallied double figures in the scoring column. Heather Butler tallied 14 points on the night while freshman Elizabeth Masengil made an impressive debut with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
No. 25 Gonzaga won their season opener with a 64-54 victory over Idaho on Friday night. The Zags were led by senior guard Haiden Palmer who finished with 18 points, including 10 in the final 13 minutes of play. Palmer finished with seven rebounds and a game-high seven steals. Junior Keani Albanez was the only other Zag to crack double-digits, finishing with 13.
Lost in the shuffle of Friday night’s victory for the Skyhawks was Butler’s failure to extend her NCAA three-point record. Butler’s 80 game consecutive streak with a three-point field goal was snapped when the senior went 0 for 5 on the night. Scoring 14 points on the night, Butler continued her active streak of 98 consecutive games with double digits, an NCAA active high.
