VOLLEYBALL TEAM FALLS 3-0 TO EASTERN ILLINOIS

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell 3-0 to Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois (23-25, 22-25, 15-25) at Lantz Arena this evening.
Sophomore Lynsey Hazelwood led the Skyhawks (8-19, 2-9 OVC) tonight, accounting for 10 kills against three errors in 20 attempts (.350 attack percentage). Hazelwood also scooped up 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Amanda Crask (26 assists), Chelsea Bowles (match-high 12 digs) and Julia Devinney (match-high five blocks) also guided UT Martin this evening.
The Skyhawks led 3-1 to start off the first set and after briefly falling behind, pieced together four straight points to take a 9-7 advantage. Eastern Illinois then would use a 5-0 run to go on top 12-9 before UT Martin battled back to lead 15-14. Four more ties would take place – including a 23-23 score – before the Panthers ended the set with back-to-back kills.
Allie Whimpey’s four kills in six swings paced UT Martin in the first set.
A kill by Devinney pulled the Skyhawks within one point (5-4) to start the second set but Eastern Illinois pushed its lead out to 8-4. Back-to-back kills by Crask and Hazelwood sliced UT Martin’s deficit to 15-14 but the Panthers would soon take a three-point lead at 20-17. Kills by Whimpey and Hazelwood got the Skyhawks within two at 21-19 and 24-22 but Eastern Illinois concluded the set on the next possession.
Hazelwood slammed down six kills in nine attempts while Crask was responsible for 13 assists and Emily Keaton accounted for seven digs in the second set. Despite the loss, UT Martin hit .263 and sided out at 75 percent (18-for-24).
UT Martin held early leads of 3-1 and 7-6 in the third set but Eastern Illinois would soon claim a 10-7 lead courtesy of four unanswered points. Hazelwood piled up three straight kills for the Skyhawks to help UT Martin stay within striking distance (14-11). After an assisted block by Devinney and Keaton made the score 18-15, the Panthers would go on a 7-0 run to close out the set.
The Skyhawks will go for a season sweep of SIU Edwardsville when they visit the Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. UT Martin defeated SIU Edwardsville by a 3-1 margin (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19) at home on Sept. 27.
