MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team battled but fell 3-0 to Morehead State (16-25, 20-25, 17-25) in Ohio Valley Conference action at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
Today served as the annual “Dig Pink” match for UT Martin, as donations were accepted to help fight the battle against cancer.
The Skyhawks were led offensively by Amanda Crask this afternoon, as the sophomore out of Louisville, Ky. led the team in kills (six), attack percentage (.357) and assists (22). Julia Devinney, Madison Wessling, Lynsey Hazelwood and Allie Whimpey also had five kills apiece to lead UT Martin (8-18, 2-8 OVC).
Chelsea Bowles (11 digs) and Alisha Erves (four blocks) paced the Skyhawk defense.
The Skyhawks trailed 5-3 in the first set before a 9-0 Morehead State run made the score 14-3. Devinney then provided two straight kills for UT Martin as the Skyhawks would later use a 4-0 run to get all the way back within seven points at 20-13. Another Devinney kill kept the margin at seven (21-14) but Morehead State would score four of the final six points.
UT Martin held the lead for most of the second set, opening action with a 4-1 advantage. A Hazelwood kill provided the Skyhawks with a 10-5 lead, forcing Morehead State to burn a timeout. UT Martin kept its lead until three unanswered points by the Eagles resulted in a 16-14 Morehead State lead. After the Skyhawks staged a comeback to even the score at 18-all, Morehead State once again used a 3-0 run to go back on top on its way to the 25-20 win.
Wessling, Hazelwood and Whimpey each had three kills in the second set to help a Skyhawk offense that hit .258 (12 kills, four errors) in 31 attempts as a team.
An assisted block by Erves and Whimpey gave UT Martin a 4-3 lead in the third set. Neither side could open up a lead of more than two points until Morehead State took a 9-6 advantage. The Skyhawks would come back to even the score thanks to three straight points, capped off with a Michelle McLaughlin service ace. The score was knotted at 11-11 until Morehead State went on a 10-0 run to make the score 21-11. UT Martin would get within seven points at 24-17 but the Eagles came back with a kill on the next possession to end the match.
The Skyhawks go back on the road for their next two matches, squaring off against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 1) and SIU Edwardsville (Nov. 2) next weekend.
