MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team wrapped up its fourth tournament of the fall, hosting Ohio Valley Conference opponents Morehead State and Southeast Missouri over the weekend.
The event featured a dual-match format between the UT Martin, Southeast Missouri and Morehead State. The Skyhawks won nine singles or double matches over the weekend, giving the squad 50 wins in four fall tournaments.
Freshmen Burcu Tari and Sarah Candeloro each won three of four singles matches over the weekend. While Jessica Silva and Florence Nicole each tallied one singles victory.
Candeloro won both doubles matches, teaming up with McCall and Tari. Tari notched a pair of doubles victories as well, including one with Silva. Ivon Simic and Nicole also picked up a doubles victory over Southeast Missouri.
“Despite having two of our top two players out of the tournament, we still were able to win our share of matches,” said UT Martin tennis coach Dennis Taylor. “Candeloro and Tari, despite being freshmen, were forced to play up two spots and more than held their own. Tari who was previously undefeated this fall, suffered her first loss of the season but played the best match of the tournament against Morehead State’s No. 1.”
“Having our lower players play up several places in the line-up is tough but it is great experience for them”, said Taylor. “The experience they gained this weekend will really pay off next spring. I’ve been extremely impressed with Katie McCall’s play as she has continued to improve the most this fall.”
The Skyhawks will be back in action this weekend, Friday, Oct. 18 through Sunday Oct. 20 at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional held at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
