MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team used three goals in the second half to pick up the Ohio Valley Conference win at Morehead State. Tonight’s 3-0 decision gave UT Martin head soccer coach Phil McNamara his 200th career victory.
The Skyhawks (5-7-1, 3-1 OVC) leaned on the leadership of their upperclassmen, as senior Abi Sanvee scored the opening goal, her fourth goal of the season. Juniors Ashlie Watson and Michelle Calmeyn put the game out of reach with one goal each. Watson and Calmeyn paced the Skyhawks with two shots each, both tallying a pair of shots on goal.
In goal it was junior Mariah Klenke who notched her fourth shutout on the year and 12th of her career. Klenke tallied four saves on four opportunities.
“Tonight’s win was a strange one from the stand point that we won by three clear goals yet Morehead State played us off the park the first half,” said McNamara. “We told the players at halftime that we needed to play smarter, more physical and more direct. The players responded extremely well and made a couple big plays in the second half.”
After 14 seasons on the pitch, seeing stops at Virginia Intermont and Carson-Newman before coming to UT Martin, McNamara notched his 200th career victory Friday night. “I have been blessed to have coached a number of quality players the last 14 seasons,” said McNamara. “Not only have we won championships but I have had kids that are willing to learn and work their socks off for my programs. A lot of work has gone into this milestone. I need to thank my players and staff members, especially Leslie Gillies who has been with me as an assistant for nearly half of those wins. It has been a very interesting and fun ride.”
After an offensively uneventful first period, it didn’t take long for the Skyhawks to turn up the heat in the second period. Action began in the 47th minute when Dominika Conc took a corner kick. Following the corner, senior Hannah McGowen came out of a scramble of players to find fellow senior Sanvee as she fired the opening goal past the Morehead State keeper. Sanvee’s eventual game-winner was her third on the season and fourth goal overall.
McGowen was once again in on the action in the 61st minute when she lofted the corner into the box. Lucy Pater found the corner before connecting with Watson who scored the Skyhawks second goal of the evening. Watson’s goal was her second of the season, both coming in consecutive games.
Over the course of the final 20 minutes, Klenke registered three saves to keep the Morehead State offense at bay. Klenke tallied her final save of the evening off a shot by Jade Flory at the 83:02 mark.
Despite holding a 2-0 advantage with just seconds to play, UT Martin would not leave any goals on the field tonight. Senior Jessica Horvatich found Calmeyn for a 30-yard strike at the 89:56 mark to close out the victory. The goal was Calmeyn’s second strike of the season.
UT Martin will make the short trek to Richmond, Ky. on Sunday, Oct. 13 as they take on OVC foe Eastern Kentucky. Action from EKU Soccer Field is slated to get underway at noon.
