BUCHANAN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team capped off play at the Skyhawk Classic with a 1-under-par 287 final round in route to a second place finish at 17-under-par 847. Skyhawk Tyler Guy finished runner-up in the individual competition at 10-under-par 206 and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Tyler Shellnut who finished tied for fourth at 7-under-par 209.
UT Martin was chasing Lee University, who held onto its lead to claim the tournament title at 24-under-par 840. The Skyhawks were led in the final round by Guy and Shellnut who each fired 3-under-par 69s on the day. Brendon Caballero carded a 2-over-par 74 and landed in a tie for 17th place at even-par for the tournament. Austin Swafford and Ben Reeves both finished in a tie for 39th position with tournament totals of 4-over-par 220.
“Our team played extremely well this week,” said Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter. “Any time you can have three rounds under-par, you will give yourself a chance to win any golf tournament. We had an opportunity to win today but we just didn’t execute the par-3s like we should have and our chipping wasn’t as sharp as it has been in the past.”
He added, “We just weren’t able to make up any ground on Lee University, who played outstanding this week.”
The second UT Martin team in the field, the Orange squad, carded a 12-over-par 300 in the final round and finished in 13th position. The Orange team was led by Clay Harbin, who was tied with Caballero for 17th at even-par 216. Peyton Deming finished two strokes back at 2-over-par 218, while John Sisinni ended up at 7-overpar 223 and Gavin Shellnut rounded out play at 10-over-par 226.
In the team competition behind Lee and UT Martin, Murray State was the only other team under-par at 2-under-par 862 to finish third. Southern Illinois claimed fourth place at even-par, while John A. Logan rounded out the top five at 2-over-par 866.
In the individual competition Lee University’s Hunter Vest claimed a two-stroke victory over Guy by ending with a 12-under-par 204 three-round showing. Tucker Wallace claimed third place honors at 8-under-par 208, while Shellnut tied with Bryce Doughty of Union University for fourth at 7-under-par 209.
The Skyhawk Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament, conducted by The University of Tennessee at Martin and hosted at Paris Landing State Park Golf Course. The 87-person tournament field was made up of 16 teams and nine individual competitors. The par-72 Paris Landing Course is played at 6,685 yards during the Skyhawk Classic.
The Skyhawks will next travel to Hopkinsville, Ky., in a week to compete in the F&M Bank Austin Peay State University Intercollegiate at The Links at Novadell.
Carpenter added that, “We’ll get in our new Rhodes Golf Center and work on our short game to get ready for next week at Austin Peay and it will be a good test for us. If we can play like this again we’ll have another good shot to win.”
