MARTIN, Tenn. – The No. 19-ranked University of Tennessee at Martin rifle team made quite an impression in their first two competitions of the 2013-14 season, smashing four school records during its season-opening swing at the Ole Miss Open and Memphis Open over the weekend.

The record-setting weekend began with an all-around remarkable performance by the mixed team at Ole Miss. The Skyhawks tied a school record with 2,281 smallbore points and broke the program mark with 2,336 air rifle points, leading to an all-time aggregate mark of 4,617 points (16 points higher than the previous benchmark). The next day at Memphis, UT Martin mixed team fired an aggregate score of 4,597 – the third-highest total in school history – while the women’s squad compiled 4,412 total points.

“The team put together a superior performance at Ole Miss, breaking or tying every school record,” Skyhawk head coach Bob Beard said. “Memphis was disappointing but after losing 20 points in penalties, we still had the third-best score in school history. Overall, this was an excellent start to the season.”

In smallbore at Ole Miss, the mixed team was led by Dana Maurizio’s career-high score of 583 – tying current teammate Steve Hahn for the school record. Ironically, Hahn was the next-best shooter with a final tally of 571, while Sean O’Brien (565), Dacotah Faught (562) and Joe Barefoot (557) rounded out the scoring.

Nikki Kroll (553), Jordan Jensen (541) and Jacob Stolley (538) all competed as individuals for UT Martin.

On the women’s side, freshman Breanna Flint led the way with a career-best 569 score in smallbore. Jordan Goodwin followed with a 545 while Kelly James added 543 points and Katrina Klaes secured a 522.

It was the freshman Faught who fired a career-high 592 to tie the school record held by Heather Tillson in her collegiate air rifle debut to lead the mixed team. Jessica Cobb also accounted for a strong 590 to tie a career-high, followed by Maurizio’s 582. Hahn and Kroll concluded the scoring with tallies of 572 and 570, respectively.

Logan Hunt (a career-best 572) and Barefoot (564) competed as individuals for the Skyhawks.

Flint paced the women’s team once again in air rifle, recording a score of career-best 580. Goodwin (568), James (567) and Jamie Arnett (566) filed closely behind while Alex Haid was responsible for a career-high score of 560.

At Memphis, Faught’s smallbore gun stayed hot with a career-high score of 578. Maurizio followed with a 577, followed by Hahn (563), O’Brien (560) and Barefoot (557).

Kroll competed as an individual, firing a score of 548.

Flint emerged as the women’s team leader once again in smallbore, tallying a team-high 559 points. James was responsible for a 553 score, while Haid and Goodwin accounted for scores of 543 and 525, respectively.

In air rifle, Maurizio compiled 587 points to lead the mixed squad. Hahn tacked on 581 more points, followed by Cobb’s 578 tally. Faught (573) and Kroll (566) finished the scoring for UT Martin.

Barefoot’s score of 562 counted toward individual status.

The Skyhawk women’s squad was led in air rifle by Flint (575). Goodwin’s 563 was the next-highest mark, followed by James’ 551 and Haid’s 543.

UT Martin will look to continue its hot stretch during Homecoming weekend, hosting Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State on Sunday, Oct. 6.
