EQUESTRIAN SQUAD TURNS AWAY NO. 8 SOUTH DAKOTA STATE IN SEASON OPENER

WACO, Texas – The No. 10 University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad picked up a big victory in its season-opener on Friday night, defeating No. 8 South Dakota State via a raw score tiebreaker in the first day of the Willis Invitational, hosted by Baylor.
The two teams tied 8-8 but the Skyhawks gained 1,154 points compared to South Dakota State’s 1,150.25 points.
“It was a hard-fought win for our group,” UT Martin head coach Meghan Corvin said. “I am so proud of our Western discipline. All but three were new to the collegiate arena and they stepped up. We played South Dakota State point for point and in the end we were able to edge them in raw score. This was a great way to start our season."
In Hunterseat, Mykaela Van Selus earned MOP honors with a 73-point ride in equitation on the flat. She earned a point along with Reid Rickett, who posted a 69-point ride. In equitation over fences, Nora Wilson brought home MOP accolades with a 79-point ride. Erin Douglas also tallied 79 points, tallying a point for the Skyhawks.
In Western, Jordan Elmore (71 points) and Kenzie Perry (70.5) each accounted for points in horsemanship. In reining, Megan Marie Foley earned MOP honors with a 71-point ride while Samantha Knight captured a point with 69.5 points.
The Skyhawks will now face No. 7 Baylor and New Mexico State on Saturday to complete the Willis Invitational, followed by a Sunday, Sept. 29 matchup at Southern Methodist.
