BUTLER NAMED TO 2013 CFPA FCS WIDE RECEIVER AWARD WATCH LIST
May 21, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin’s Jeremy Butler ranks as one of 34 returning Football Championship Subdivision wide receivers to have earned a spot on the 2013 College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list.
Butler is one of only three Ohio Valley Conference wide receivers to make the cut, joining Eastern Illinois’ Erik Lora and Murray State’s Walter Powell. All 34 wideouts will vie for the top wide receiver award by the CFPA, the largest awards organization in Division-I college football.
Lining up alongside All-American Quentin Sims, Butler made a name for himself in his debut season at UT Martin in 2012. The 6-3, 205-pound Bradenton, Fla. native earned OVC All-Newcomer accolades and was named the league’s Newcomer of the Week twice (Oct. 14, Nov. 11) during his junior season after transferring in from College of the Sequoias.
Overall, Butler led the OVC with three multi-touchdown games and also ranked in the top-10 in the OVC in seven other categories: touchdown receptions (10, fourth); yards per catch (14.7, fifth); receptions per game (5.1, sixth); receiving yards per game (75.0, seventh); total touchdowns (10; eighth); receptions (51, eighth) and receiving yards (750, ninth).
Each and every one of Butler’s 10 touchdowns came against OVC competition, highlighted by a dominant outing at Murray State on Oct. 13. In that game, he hauled in eight catches for 177 yards and four touchdowns – all of which came in the first 32:30 of the game. He also cracked the 100-yard plateau at Tennessee Tech on Nov. 10 (142 yards on career-high 13 catches) and against Jacksonville State (nine catches, 101 yards) on Nov. 3. He snared two touchdowns in the game against Tennessee Tech and also again in a victory over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 6.
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions and players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. The 2013 CFPA FCS awards will be announced on Jan. 8, 2014.
