MARTIN, Tenn. – It was announced today that The University of Tennessee at Martin’s Leah Taylor was one of 12 NCAA Division-I recipients to be named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 softball first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Taylor joins players from Tennessee, North Carolina State, Charlotte, Campbell, Western Carolina, UT Chattanooga, Appalachian State, East Carolina and Liberty on the District 3 first team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution.

A marketing major with an impressive 3.97 GPA, Taylor is a two-time Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient. She was named to the CoSIDA All-District and All-America teams last season while also claiming an OVC Medal of Honor and being tabbed an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. She is a member of the UT Martin Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Hoops for Heroes as well as participating with numerous elementary school events.

On the field, Taylor has been nothing short of remarkable. This season, she has become the UT Martin all-time career leader in: runs scored (154), steals (108) and triples (18). The Brownsville, Tenn. native currently leads the OVC in steals (37) and is eighth in the nation in that category.

The reigning OVC Player of the Year, Taylor currently has a .297 batting average while hitting a career-high eight home runs and driving in 25 runs on the season. She continued to leave her mark in the UTM single-game record books as well, hitting two home runs against Jacksonville State, tallying four hits against Middle Tennessee State and swiping four bases against Southern Illinois.

Overall, the 96 first-team Academic All-District® honorees will advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored.

Taylor will be playing in her final regular season series this weekend when the Skyhawks travel to Southeast Missouri this Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. for Game 1 of the three game series.
