GOLF TEAM SHOWS IMPROVEMENT IN SECOND ROUND OF OVC CHAMPIONSHIPS
April 26, 2013
DICKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team trimmed 13 strokes off its first round score this morning during Round 2 of the Ohio Valley Conference championships at GreyStone Golf Club.
The Skyhawks fired a 292 (+4) as a team today, moving up a spot into 10th place at 597 overall (+21). Austin Peay kept its lead through the second round today, as the Governors are the only team to shoot under-par through two rounds (-8; 568).
“We played a lot better today and the scores showed that,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “The problem is everybody else played well too so we didn’t make up any ground. But I am satisfied with what we did today.”
All-OVC teamer Brendon Caballero kept his share of the lead for the majority of the day before narrowly slipping to second place. The sophomore out of Brentwood, Tenn. shot a 71 today, carding five birdies – including three out of four holes on the back-nine. His score of 140 (-4) is just one shot back of Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb for the tournament lead heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Leading UT Martin today was junior Tyler Shellnut, who shot a two-under 70 to jump up to 10th place in the tournament. At one point, he played 16 holes of bogey-free golf, tallying five birdies in the process.
OVC Freshman of the Year Ben Reeves (73), Graham Sleigh (78) and Tyler Guy (78) each improved their scores by six shots today. Reeves registered five birdies (including four in a span of seven holes on the back-nine) while Sleigh tallied two birdies and Guy amassed one birdie.
“Our top three were solid today and our other two played better,” Carpenter said. “We have two players that have a legitimate chance to win the tournament. We will be ready for tomorrow.”
The Skyhawks tee off the final round of the OVC tournament on Saturday, April 26 from 8-8:40 a.m.
