CABALLERO LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF OVC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
April 25, 2013
DICKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin sophomore Brendon Caballero fired a 69 to finish in a tie for the lowest score after Round One of the Ohio Valley Conference golf championships at the GreyStone Golf Club.
Caballero, who is tied with Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb for the best first round score, birdied holes 15 and 17 down the stretch to hold on to a share of the lead. He led all 55 competitors with six birdies this afternoon.
“Brendon played exceptionally well today,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “If he can live without a few mistakes tomorrow, he should have another very good round. I’m extremely happy for him.”
As a team, UT Martin shot a 305 – which ranks 11th in the tournament. All in all, only one team (Austin Peay at 4-under) shot under par today on the challenging GreyStone course.
Tyler Shellnut shot a 73 in the first round for the Skyhawks, followed by Ben Reeves’ 79. Graham Sleigh and Tyler Guy each carded an 84 to round out the scoring for UT Martin.
“We didn’t execute the game that we have been playing,” Carpenter said. “It’s very unfortunate that we had to have a bad round like today but that’s golf. I feel bad for our kids but I think we will bounce back tomorrow with a good second round.”
UT Martin will return to the course quickly, as all five Skyhawks are scheduled to tee off between 8-8:40 a.m. for the second round on Friday, April 26.
