WARDLAW BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN 5K METER RUN AT OLE MISS INVITE
April 14, 2013
OXFORD, Miss. – Senior Amanda Wardlaw broke the University of Tennessee at Martin record in the 5000 meter run this weekend to cap off another successful spring track meet for the Skyhawks in the Ole Miss Invite.
A native of Somerville, Tenn., Wardlaw finished the 5k in 18:18.01, shattering the previous program record of 18:19.3 by Shalaine Phaup in 2003.
“Amanda’s new university record is icing on the cake after improving nine-and-a-half minutes since walking on as a junior,” UT Martin head coach Gordon Sanders said.
Wardlaw was one of five Skyhawks to take part in the 5000 meter run, joining Laura Wind (19:01.09), Hannah Wolters (19:13.03), Grace Lucas (20:27.04) and Abby Frantom (20:41.05).
On the men’s side, Justin Morgan completed the 5000 meter run in 15:30.85, which ranks as the fifth-best time in UT Martin history. Tallon Scott (16:20.80), Ryan Pett (16:36.96), Mark Graubner (17:26.77) and Zach Phifer (17:29.95) also competed in the event.
“Regardless of a few glitches during the day, no one lost their focus so we had seven personal bests with five being huge improvements,” Sanders said. “Laura improved by 71 seconds, Justin by 70 seconds in this past year, as well as Abby and Grace doing even better. We can only hope that next week’s weather helps us as much as Saturday’s perfect conditions did.”
The Skyhawks conclude their spring season next weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday, April 20.
