SKYHAWKS CONTINUE SUCCESSFUL SPRING SEASON AT MARGARET SIMMONS INVITATIONAL
April 8, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin earned a pair of victories and set eight personal bests over the weekend at the Margaret Simmons Track Invitational, hosted by Murray State University.
Despite recovering from a recent car accident, senior Laura Wind was responsible for one of the Skyhawk victories by bringing home first place honors after a 4:53.97 performance in the 1500 meter run. Freshman Justin Morgan was the other UT Martin victor, as his time of 9:05.89 qualified as the best time in the 3000 meter run.
Wind also took part in the 800 meter run, finishing eighth with a time of 2:27.84. Five Skyhawks competed in the 3000 meter run, led by Amanda Wardlaw (10:53.84, seventh place). Hannah Wolters (11:33.96), Alexandra Stover (11:52.79), Grace Lucas (11:56.80) and Abby Frantom (12:03.06) also represented UT Martin in the event.
On the men’s side, Ryan Pett nearly came up with a victory in the 800 meter run, finishing just four-tenths of a second behind the winner. Pett would cross the finish line in 1:59.93.
Vance Pounders and Tallon Scott both competed in the 1500 meter run, finishing with times of 4:14.34 and 4:34.94, respectively.
In the same event that Morgan won, Zach Phifer (9:51.28), Josiah Roberts (9:56.98) and Mark Graubner (10:19.63) also performed well in the 3000 meter run.
UT Martin head coach Gordon Sanders was very pleased with his team’s performance heading into its final two track events of the spring.
“Two wins and eight personal bests is just what the team needed before our two main events happen,” Sanders said. “Other than the wind, the weather was perfect. Justin’s solo lead to win was not a surprise but Laura’s 300-yard kick to pass four other ladies spread out toward the finish was as exciting as was the surprising 15 second personal best. After her car accident, she was only cleared to run the afternoon before the race.”
The Skyhawks return to action next Saturday, April 13 when they travel to Oxford, Miss. for the Ole Miss Invitational.
