TENNIS TEAM CHALKS UP BIG 4-3 OVC VICTORY OVER JACKSONVILLE STATE
April 5, 2013
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A gutsy performance by The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team led the Skyhawks to their third Ohio Valley Conference win in four tries, downing Jacksonville State by a 4-3 margin at Hadley Park on Thursday afternoon.
UT Martin (4-10, 3-1 OVC) clinched the doubles point early and split the singles competition, thanks to a pair of come-from-behind efforts at No. 2 and No. 5. Both Anna Marie Herbold and Jessica Silva overcame losses in the first set to guide the Skyhawks to victory, with Silva winning a third set tiebreaker to seal the win.
“Basically, it was very, very close all day long and the first one that blinked lost,” UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Anna Marie lost the first set six-love and came back to win her match which really set the tone. She was up three match points in our last match against Southeast Missouri and she had a girl come back on her so she returned the favor this time around. That was a huge comeback on her part.”
The Skyhawks earned the doubles point by securing victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Silva and Anna Winkelmann registered an 8-1 win at No. 3, while Katie McCall and Johanie Van Zyl compiled an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
Simic emerged victorious in No. 1 singles, defeating Raisa Guasti 7-5, 6-2. Herbold then kickstarted the comeback with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Raphaela Lima and Silva finished off the win with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at No. 5.
UT Martin returns to action this weekend when it travels to Morehead State on Saturday, April 6 and Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, April 7.
