March 27, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team travels to Capaha Field this weekend for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference tilt against the Southeast Missouri Redhawks. First pitch times are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2 p.m. on Friday, March 29 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
The Skyhawks (8-16, 1-8 OVC) will look to stay hot at the plate this weekend, as UT Martin is the only OVC team to boast three of the league’s top-10 hitters in batting average. Byron Johann ranks fifth in the league with a .358 batting average and carries an OVC-long 11-game hitting streak into this series. Wade Collins ranks eighth in the OVC in batting average (.349) and sports an eight-game hitting streak, while Grant Glasser is ninth in the league with a .346 batting average thanks in large part to a team-best 11 multi-hit outings.
Matt Haynes (.396 over his last 14 games) and Brent Morris (.429 over his last seven games) has also given the Skyhawks a potent punch in the lineup over the last few weeks.
On the mound, UT Martin will go with senior right-hander Dan Tobik (1-2, 3.82 ERA) in Game 1, followed by sophomore southpaws Taylor Cox (0-2, 6.14) and Dalton Potts (3-2, 5.79) in Games 2 and 3, respectively. Tobik is coming off a career-best 12 strikeouts in six innings against Tennessee Tech last Friday, as he now ranks second in the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings (11.15).
Southeast Missouri (12-14, 4-5 OVC) is coming off an 11-4 loss at Missouri State on Wednesday. In that game, Dalton Hewitt, Andy Lennington and Cole Bieser all had two hits, while Matt Tellor drove in a pair of runs to lead the Redhawk offense.
Ryan Barnes’ .341 average leads six Southeast Missouri regulars who hit above .300. Lennington has driven in a team-high 21 RBI while Tellor has slammed a team-high five homers to go along with 20 RBI for the Redhawks, who lead the OVC in hits (249, 9.6 per game).
Southeast Missouri will open the series with senior right-hander Trevor Kill (0-0, 3.43 ERA). Sophomore lefty Will Spitzfaden (2-2, 4.20) and senior lefty Zack Smith (2-2, 6.32) will get the starting nods in Game 2 and Game 3, respectively.
