MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team captured its third championship in four spring tournaments this afternoon, winning the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate title by a commanding 10 shots at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
The Skyhawks shaved one stroke off their round from yesterday, compiling a team score of 296 for an aggregate of 593 for the tournament. UT Martin bested Newberry College (603), Eastern Kentucky (603), Northern Kentucky (605), Evansville (613), Detroit Mercy (617), Tennessee Tech (621), Northern Iowa (622) and Tennessee State (632).
UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said the tournament win meant a lot to him, given his background with the tournament’s namesake.
“Bobby Nichols was a dear friend of mine,” Carpenter said. “It’s so special to win this tournament because I wanted to win it so bad for him. It made it nice ”
Ben Reeves led the way for UT Martin in Round 2, firing a 70 to finish second only to Tennessee’s Brandon Rodgers, who competed as an individual. Reeves compiled a two-day total of 144.
Brendon Caballero shot a 72 today, giving him a score of 147 for the tournament. Graham Sleigh carded a 76 this afternoon (149 tournament total), while Clay Harbin tallied a second round score of 78 (153 total). Tyler Guy shot an 85 to cap off a 162 tournament total for the Skyhawks, who have also won the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate (Feb. 16-18) and Grover Page Classic (March 10-11) this spring.
“Our 296 today was an outstanding score,” Carpenter said. “The golf course was muddy, windy and was set up difficult for today’s round. If the course played 7,000 yards it was every inch or longer because wherever the ball hit, it stuck. But coming into today, we felt like we had just as good a chance of winning the tournament as anybody. I can’t tell you how proud I am of our team – we played really well.”
The Skyhawks return to the links on Saturday, March 30 when they compete at the Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. The tournament – hosted by Arkansas State University – will be played at Ridge Pointe Golf Course.
