MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team pounded 31 hits and scored 20 runs this afternoon, but the Skyhawks fell in both games of a doubleheader against Murray State at Reagan Field.
Sophomores Sonny Mastromatteo and Nico Zych each went 5-for-10 today to lead UT Martin offensively. Seniors Matt Young, Byron Johann and Grant Glasser each accounted for four hits, while Young crossed the plate six times. Johann’s four RBI led the Skyhawks on the day, while Zych and Brent Morris were each responsible for three RBI. Glasser and Wade Collins also each scored three runs for the Skyhawks (7-12, 1-5 Ohio Valley Conference).
Relievers Chris Flores (3.1 innings), Chris Ross (1.2 innings) and Stu Jones (1.2 innings) each did not allow an earned run today. Trevor Lundgrin (0-1) and Dalton Potts (2-2) were charged with the losses in Game 1 and Game 2, respectively.
The Skyhawks kick off a five-game homestand on Tuesday, March 23 when they take on Memphis at 6 p.m.
Game 1
UT Martin scored the first seven runs of the contest but couldn’t hold on in a 15-13 slugfest – despite a career-high four hits and five runs scored from Young.
The Skyhawks scored twice in the first inning, thanks to a two-run single by Johann. Glasser led off the game by reaching on an error, then moved up to second on a single by Young. After both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch, Johann stroked a 3-2 pitch up the middle to give UT Martin a 2-0 lead.
Skyhawk starter Taylor Cox shut the Thoroughbreds down for the first two innings, allowing UT Martin to build on its lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles by Glasser and Young opened the frame and after a Collins walk, the bases were loaded with no outs. All three runners then advanced on a passed ball before Morris doubled in two more runs to make the score 5-0. Three straight singles and a sacrifice fly by Brewer then brought in two more runs to give UT Martin a 7-0 advantage.
However, Murray State pushed five runs across in its half of the third to slice the Skyhawk lead to 7-5. UT Martin generated three more runs in the fourth, ignited by a leadoff single by Young. Johann (single) and Collins (RBI double) then followed and two batters later, Zych ripped a two-run single to center to make the score 10-5.
The ‘Breds responded with six runs in the fourth to take an 11-10 lead but UT Martin tied things up in the top of the fifth. Young pulled a two-out double to left center and came around to score when Johann guided the first pitch he saw in the at-bat for a double down the right field line.
Murray State added a run in the bottom of the fifth but Lundgrin held the ‘Breds scoreless in the sixth to keep the score at 12-11.
UT Martin once again tied the game in the seventh, as Young was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to score on a balk. Murray State would then score three runs in the bottom of the seventh until Ross held the ‘Breds scoreless in the eighth.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth trailing 15-12, the Skyhawks kept battling. Johann (hit by pitch), Collins (walk) and Morris (walk) all reached base safely to open the inning. Mastromatteo would bring in Johann on an RBI groundout, but that would be all the offense UT Martin could produce.
Game 2
Mastromatteo registered three hits and scored twice, but Murray State scored 10 runs in the first four innings on its way to the 11-7 win.
UT Martin got off to a good start, pushing across a pair of runs in the top of the first. Glasser opened the game with a single and Young followed by reaching on a fielder’s choice. A double steal followed, putting two men in scoring position. Johann (groundout) and Morris (single) then brought both runners in to give the Skyhawks a 2-0 advantage.
However, Murray State struck for two runs in the first, four in the second and one in the third to go ahead 7-2. The Skyhawks got one run back in the fourth courtesy of a Collins double and Zych single, but the ‘Breds tacked on three more runs in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead.
Flores pieced together scoreless fifth and sixth innings, allowing UT Martin to shave another run off its deficit in the seventh. Mastromatteo lined a two-out double down the right field line and came around to score two pitches later when Matt Haynes singled to right center.
Both Flores and Jones combined to shut down Murray State in the seventh, but the ‘Breds would add an unearned run in the eighth to go ahead 11-4.
UT Martin would give its all in the ninth – scoring three runs. Zych, Mastromatteo and pinch-hitter Drew Erie led off the inning with singles, with two runs coming in to score off a fielding error by Murray State. Luis Paublini then drove in Erie on a sacrifice fly but that would be all the runs the Skyhawks could scratch out in the ninth.
