GOLF TEAM CHARGES BACK TO CLAIM SECOND CONSECUTIVE GROVER PAGE CLASSIC TITLE

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team overcame a six stroke deficit to claim its second consecutive Grover Page Classic today. Using the low round of the day, an 8-over-par 296, the Skyhawks finished three shots ahead of the field. Defending individual champion Brendon Caballero used a 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for second at 2-over-par 218 overall.
“At our team meeting last night I told the guys that I felt we had a great opportunity to win the tournament,” said UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter. “If we go out and play a nice steady round, everything else would take care of itself and that is exactly what we did.
The 2013 Grover Page Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by The University of Tennessee at Martin and hosted at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. The 75-player field was made up of 13 teams, including eight from the state of Tennessee and five Ohio Valley Conference member institutions, along with 11 participants competing as individuals. The par 72 Jackson Country Club course played at a length of 6,783 yards.
The Skyhawks were led today by Caballero’s under-par showing, while Graham Sleigh carded an even-par round and Ben Reeves contributed a 1-over-par 73. Reeves’ showing also landed him in the top ten among individuals at 6-over-par 222. Rounding out the scoring for UT Martin was Clay Harbin with an 8-over-par 80, landing him in a tie for 17th in the individual standings, and Tyler Shellnut finished the tournament with an 20-over-par 236 showing.
“To repeat is very special and it speaks well for our guys and the hard work that they have put in this spring,” added Carpenter. “The guys are hungry to win some more tournaments but we still have some work to do though. We need to clean some things up and get better with our putting before next week’s tournament.”
UT Martin’s second team in the field, the Orange squad, also recorded a top five finish. The Orange squad came in at 45-over-par 909 and were led by Tyler Guy who finished among the top ten individuals at 74-71-77-222. Taylor Deming added a top 15 finish with his 75-72-78-225 tournament total. John Sisinni and Austin Smith rounded out the Orange squads scoring with tournament totals of 76-79-74-229 and 74-81-78-233 respectively.
Carpenter said of the Orange squad’s play that, “I was really proud of how they played. Even though they only had four players, they still beat some really good teams.”
Behind UT Martin in second place was Union University at 29-over-par 890, while Murray State finished third at 34-over-par 898. Finishing out the top five were Lipscomb at 35-over-par 899 and the UT Martin Orange squad.
In the individual competition Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb ran away with a six stroke victory, finishing at 2-under-par 212. Kody Alexander and Caballero were tied for second at 2-over-par 218, while Lipscomb’s Blanton Farmer and Lee Whitehead of Tennessee Tech rounded out the top five tied at 3-over-par 219.
This is the second victory of the spring season for the Skyhawks in only three tournaments, also winning the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate at the Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia, Miss.
UT Martin will now turn its attention to next week’s Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, played at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
