MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team slugged three home runs in Game 1 of today’s doubleheader against Jacksonville State, but the Gamecocks claimed a 10-5 victory and followed that with a 20-2 win in Game 2 at Skyhawk Field.
Seniors Byron Johann and Wade Collins paced the UT Martin offense today. Both homered in Game 1 while Johann tallied three hits and three runs scored on the day. Collins also picked up three hits today while driving in four of the Skyhawks’ seven runs. Sonny Mastromatteo also hit a home run in Game 1 for UT Martin (6-9, 1-2 Ohio Valley Conference).
The Skyhawk pitching staff tallied 19 strikeouts in the two games today, including 11 strikeouts in Game 1 alone. Senior right-hander Nick Wilson allowed just one run over two appearances out of the bullpen today but sophomore starting pitchers Taylor Cox (0-1) and Dalton Potts (2-1) both were charged with their first losses of the season.
UT Martin returns to the diamond when it faces Lipscomb on Tuesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. at Skyhawk Field.
Game 1
The Skyhawks received at least one hit from eight different spots in the lineup but Jacksonville State took advantage of seven runs through the first three innings.
After UT Martin faced a 3-0 deficit going into the bottom of the first, the Skyhawks answered with a run of their own. Johann drove the second pitch of the inning into right center for his first homer of the season.
The Gamecocks added one run in the second and three in the third but UT Martin tacked on three runs in the third and another run in the fourth to make the score 7-5. Mastromatteo ignited the third inning rally with a two-out homer to left field, his first career longball. Johann then drew a walk and four pitches later, Collins drilled a home run out to left center. In the fourth, Brent Morris pulled a one-out triple into the gap in right center and came around to score on a Nico Zych RBI groundout.
Carter Smith came in to pitch at the end of the third inning and promptly did not allow a runner to reach base safely until a one-out double in the sixth. Jacksonville State added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh before Wilson pieced together two shutout innings to close out the game.
Meanwhile, UT Martin tallied a hit in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but couldn’t manufacture any more runs.
Game 2
The nightcap was scoreless through four innings, thanks to a standout start by Potts. He fanned a pair of Gamecocks in the first, then retired the side in order in the second. He did not concede a hit in either the third or fourth but Jacksonville State would score eight runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.
UT Martin got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when Johann singled and advanced to third on a fielding error. Collins then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Johann to tag up and cross the plate.
Freshman southpaw Chris Flores put up a scoreless frame in the seventh but Jacksonville State tacked on six runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
The Skyhawk offense scored once in the bottom of the eighth (Collins doubling home Wes Piersall, who reached on a leadoff pinch-hit single). However, that would be all the offense that UT Martin could produce the rest of the way.
