MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team downed North Alabama by a 5-2 margin on Sunday for its first victory of the 2013 spring season. The Skyhawks also faced Middle Tennessee (lost 6-1) and Auburn-Montgomery (lost 5-2) as part of a three-match in three-day span.
“We are beginning to look a little better,” UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Even though we lost a few of these matches I thought we have played really well. Things are starting to look up for us.”
Against North Alabama, the Skyhawks swept the doubles point. At No. 3, Anna Winkelmann and Jessica Silva earned an 8-1 victory, while Ivon Simic and Anna Marie Herbold came out on top at No. 1, 9-7. The No. 2 team of Johanie Van Zyl and Katie McCall rounded out the sweep with a 9-8 triumph.
In singles play, UT Martin picked up four victories – starting with Simic’s 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1. Herbold won at No. 2 by a 6-1, 6-3 margin, while Silva and McCall each pieced together 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
On Friday, March 2, the Skyhawks took on Middle Tennessee at Nashboro Village in Nashville. Simic earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1, but ultimately that would be the only point that UT Martin would earn. McCall fell in a heartbreaker (6-1, 4-6, 10-6) at No. 6 singles and the doubles team of Winkelmann/Silva nearly pulled off a win at No. 3 before falling 8-6.
The Skyhawks had their hands full on Monday, March 4 when they took on Auburn-Montgomery, the No. 1 team in the nation in the NAIA ranks. UT Martin held its own in doubles play, earning the early point. Van Zyl and McCall earned an 8-5 win at No. 2, while Winkelmann and Silva chalked up a 9-7 win at No. 3.
Silva earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, but unfortunately that would be the only point that the Skyhawks would earn – as Auburn-Montgomery trotted out the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 9 ranked singles players in the nation. Winkelmann took No. 9 Morgane Zowczak into three sets before falling 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
UT Martin rounds out its Spring Break road trip with visits to West Florida (Thursday, March 7) and South Alabama (Friday, March 8).
