SKYHAWK SOFTBALL TEAM WINS FIRST TWO GAMES IN RED AND BLUE CLASSIC AT OLE MISS

MARTIN, Tenn. –Sophomore Kenzi Tate ran her pitching record to 5-0 Friday afternoon as The University of Tennessee at Martin knocked off Mississippi Valley State, 5-1, in the second round of the Red and Blue Classic at Ole Miss.
Tate pitched seven innings, allowed five hits, one run and five walks. She struck out four batters in the complete-game victory.
Mississippi Valley State scored its one run in the top of the first inning. The Skyhawks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Lauren “G” Smith blasted a solo home run to left field.
UT Martin’s Stephanie Nidiffer broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Skyhawks added three more runs. Senior Becca Williams tripled to left field and plated two runs. Senior Katie Reiff scored Williams with a single.
The Skyhawks had eight hits in the game, including two home runs and two triples. In addition to Williams’ triple, senior Leah Taylor tripled.

MARTIN, Tenn. – Senior Leah Taylor went 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and sophomore Lauren “G” Smith smacked a two-run home run to center field to lead The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team to a 7-2 victory over Middle Tennessee in the opening game of the Red and Blue Classic this morning at Ole Miss.
The Skyhawks scored one run in the second inning, two more in each of the third and fourth innings and two in the top of the seventh inning. Taylor and freshman Deven Wilson were the only Skyhawks with multiple hits. However, junior Kayla Wade had a triple and an RBI.
The Skyhawks had 10 hits in the game.
Sophomore Casey Vincent picked up the win in the circle for the Skyhawks. She pitched seven innings and gave up three hits and two earned runs. She allowed one walk, while striking out five batters in the game.
Vincent is now 2-2 on the year and leads the team with 24 strikeouts.
