The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team leaves the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center for a two-game road swing opening at Ohio Valley Conference East foe Tennessee State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Monday from the Gentry Center in Nashville.
The Skyhawks (12-14, 7-5 OVC) look to build off their 75-61 victory over Southeast Missouri Saturday afternoon.
Juniors Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler led the Skyhawks with 27 and 23 points respectively against the Redhawks. Shelby Crawford and Rickiesha Bryant, playing one of their best games in a Skyhawk uniform, finished the game with a career-high 11 points and five rebounds, while Bryant recorded her sixth-career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
With the game knotted at 45-all with 13:05 left to play, the Skyhawks went on a 21-6 run over eight minutes to build a 66-51 advantage. Newsome scored seven points in the run, including a pair of free throws. She was 13-of-14 from the charity stripe in the game.
UT Martin won the battle on the boards and cashed in at the free throw line, making 18-of-24 attempts for 75 percent. The Skyhawks also scored 22 points in the paint, 29 points off turnovers and 20 second-chance points.
Tennessee State (11-12, 7-5 OVC) enters the game riding its first three-game winning streak since February 2009, after knocking off OVC East leader Belmont, 54-53. The Lady Tigers were led by Simone Hopes and Kesi Hess posting 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Tigers led nearly the entire game as the Bruins never held more than a one-possession lead. A Rachel Allen free throw with 17 seconds sealed the victory for the Lady Tigers as the final Belmont jumper sailed left.
Tennessee State’s leading scorers are seniors Kesi Hess (12.2 ppg), Simone Hopes (11.5 ppg) and Jasmin Shuler (9.5 ppg). Hopes also leads the Lady Tigers in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per night.
Last season’s matchup led to two offensive outbursts as both teams combined to score 414 points, including a 114-105 UT Martin victory in Nashville.
