MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior libero Kasey Elswick compiled a match-high 13 digs, eclipsing the all-time Ohio Valley Conference career digs mark this afternoon, but The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to league-leader Morehead State (17-25, 13-25, 18-25) at Wetherby Gym.

Elswick, a two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year recipient, reached the milestone in the second set this afternoon. She now boasts 2,458 career digs, passing the mark set by Eastern Kentucky’s Brittany Nobilio (2,454 digs from 2004-07).

Offensively, the Skyhawks were led this afternoon by freshman Shelby Hoskins (eight kills, .333 attack percentage). Amanda Crask also handed out 18 assists for UT Martin (8-16, 4-6 OVC).

Kills by Hoskins and Emily Keaton gave the Skyhawks an early lead in the first set. An assisted block by Hoskins and Taylor Simons made the score 5-4 in UT Martin’s favor but the Eagles came back with five of the next six points. A Morehead State service error and Hoskins kill on the next possession brought the Skyhawks within one (9-8) but the Eagles soon stretched out their lead to 13-9. UT Martin stayed within striking distance (15-12) before a 7-2 Morehead State run helped the Eagles close out the set.

Hoskins posted four kills with a .429 attack percentage to lead the Skyhawks in the first set.

Hoskins and Crask slammed down kills to begin the second set, but Morehead State pieced together six unanswered points to go on top by a 9-2 margin. UT Martin got back on the scoreboard thanks to an Eagle service error, but the Skyhawks would soon fall behind 14-3 thanks to a 5-0 Morehead State run. UT Martin soon responded with a 4-1 run of its own, capped off by a Hoskins kill that made the score 16-9. A kill by Lynsey Hazelwood and Morehead State attack error kept the Skyhawks within seven at 19-12, but the Eagles ended the set on a 6-1 run.

Hoskins was a perfect 3-for-3 in kills, while Elswick’s seven digs in the second set made her the OVC all-time digs leader.

Keaton began the third set with a kill for UT Martin, but Morehead State responded with a 5-0 run. However, a Crask kill ignited a 5-0 Skyhawk run that gave UT Martin the lead right back at 6-5. Another kill by Keaton and an Eagle attack error opened up an 8-6 lead for UT Martin, but Morehead State charged back to lead 9-8. A pair of Allie Whimpey kills helped the Skyhawks hold on to a one-point advantage, but Morehead State reclaimed the lead shortly thereafter. A Hazelwood service ace evened the score at 13-all, but the Eagles soon accounted for four unanswered points to go on top 19-14. Following a UT Martin timeout, the Skyhawks got back two quick points to make the score 19-16, but Morehead State scored four straight points on its way to a 6-2 run to end the match.

Whimpey had three kills off three swings while Keaton also added three kills in the third set to lead UT Martin.

The Skyhawks return home for four of their final six regular-season matches – all against OVC competition. This weekend, UT Martin will take on Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 and SIU Edwardsville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
