CRCA National Polls (Oct. 8)

MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in program history, two University of Tennessee at Martin rifle teams are amongst the nation’s top 20 squads. In the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) polls released on Oct. 8, the Skyhawk mixed team is ranked 13th in the nation, while the UT Martin women’s team is not too far behind in 18th place.

The mixed squad’s rank is the highest in several years, while this is the first time that both UT Martin rifle teams have cracked the top-20 in the polls.

“I am very proud of this accomplishment,” Skyhawk head coach Bob Beard said. “It’s always good to make school history."

UT Martin’s rifle squads have gotten off to a blazing start in 2012, as the mixed team captured top honors in the Memphis Tiger Open in its season debut on Sept. 29. The Skyhawks broke the school record for aggregate score (4,601) and air rifle score (2,328, which was 10 points better than the previous mark accomplished in 2006).

Senior Jessica Cobb was named the Memphis Tiger Open individual champion in air rifle, firing a career-best 590. That was one of 15 new career-highs recorded in the season opener, as 11 of UT Martin’s 13 shooters either set or tied a new career-best score.

The Skyhawks have also performed well at nationally-ranked Murray State (Sept. 30) and Ole Miss (Oct. 7) so far this season.

UT Martin resumes action in the final weekend of October, traveling to Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Saturday, Oct. 27, followed by a competition at Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 28.
