MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team scored first and made a valiant comeback attempt this afternoon at Morehead State, but the Eagles held on for an 8-5 win in the regular season finale for both teams at Allen Field.

At the plate, Phil Sorensen went 2-for-3 with an RBI for UT Martin (13-41, 7-20 Ohio Valley Conference). Chase Okey scored twice while Grant Glasser and Sonny Mastromatteo each tallied an RBI apiece for the Skyhawks, who banged out nine hits today.

On the mound, the Skyhawk bullpen shut out Morehead State from the fourth through eighth innings but ultimately it wasn’t enough. Starting pitcher Willie Frederick (3-9) was hit with the loss, allowing six earned runs over 2.1 innings. Danny Kelley (1.2 innings), Brendan Lozupone (one), Stu Jones (one) and Carter Smith (one) notched scoreless appearances, while Dan Tobik conceded one run in the eighth inning.

UT Martin pushed across one run in the top of the first. Matt Milligan hit a one-out single to third base, followed by back-to-back walks to Jordan Owen and Okey. Sorensen then drove in Milligan with an RBI single to put the Skyhawks on top 1-0.

Morehead State then tallied two runs (one unearned) in the bottom of the first and added two more runs with two away in the second to make the score 4-1. After Owen gunned down a man trying to score in the third, the Eagles once again did damage with two outs – plating three runs in the third to make the score 7-1 after three innings of play.

Kelley then sat Morehead State down in order in the fourth, needing just eight pitches to do so. After a leadoff double in the fifth, Lozupone entered the game and stranded the Eagle runner on third while finishing off a scoreless frame.

The Skyhawks scored once in the top of the sixth. Okey hit a two-out single up the middle, followed by a single by Sorensen. Johann then reached on an error that allowed Okey to score and get UT Martin within five runs.

Jones entered the game in the sixth, inducing a double play and a comeback groundball to the mound to keep the score at 7-2.

In the seventh, Jake Deason hit a one-out double to begin a rally for UT Martin. Glasser then followed with a double of his own, plating Deason. Owen then made the score 7-4 with a single to left field that scored Glasser.

Smith held Morehead State scoreless in the seventh, picking up a flyout and inning-ending double play to set up another scoring inning for UT Martin in the eighth.

Okey and pinch-hitter Ben Campbell each drew a walk to begin the inning. After an out was recorded, Nico Zych walked to load the bases, setting up Mastromatteo for a sacrifice fly out to right field to slice the Skyhawk deficit to only two runs.

After Morehead State added a run in the eighth, UT Martin loaded the bases and brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth. However, Eagle closer Matt Duncan escaped the jam to pick up his 13th save of the season.
