SKYHAWK BASEBALL SUFFERS 11-3 SETBACK TO MURRAY STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped an 11-3 decision to Ohio Valley Conference foe Murray State this evening.
UT Martin (11-40, 7-22 OVC) was led by Tyler Albright and Casey Harford as both men had a pair of hits and an RBI each. Ethan Whitley tallied a base knock and an RBI while Collin Edwards connected for a pair of hits. Jordan Stoner, Blake Davis and Billy Edwards all pounded out a base hit apiece. Stoner was able to extend his on base streak out to 31 games tonight.
Winston Cannon (1-8) was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs (two earned) in his six innings pitched. He was able to log a quality start though as he also sat down eight batters via the strikeout. Austin Buzick tossed 0.1 inning of work and allowed four earned runs in that span. Konnor Aherin pitched 1.2 innings of one-hit baseball. Dalton Westfall finished out the game and allowed three earned runs but rung up two along the way.
Cannon opened the game at a great pace as he forced a two-pitch flyout to open the contest followed by a strikeout. He then conceded a double to left field but remained unfazed as rung up the final batter of the frame.
Murray State would strike first in the scoring column as the Racers put up a trio of runs in the second inning to take an early 3-0 advantage.
Cannon worked around a one-out walk followed by single in the third to find a friendly fly ball followed by another strikeout to keep the Racers off of the board in the inning.
Murray State put up another run in the fourth to extend its lead out to 4-0.
Cannon worked around a leadoff double in the fifth to find a friendly ground ball followed by a walk. He kept a cool head as he struck out the next batter and finished up the frame with a first-pitch popout.
The Skyhawks would get on the board in the fifth as Billy Edwards led off the frame with a double down the left field line. He would be moved over by a Carson Shrode flyout before Harford plated him with another long flyball for an out to edge UT Martin back by a 4-1 margin.
Cannon retired the side in order in the sixth as he sat down the first two batters in the frame on strikes followed by a foulout.
UT Martin put up another run in the sixth as Albright got things started with a single to left field followed by an Aslett walk. Davis then ripped a single to left center to juice the bases in time for a Whiltey base hit up the middle to bring in Albright and narrow the score at 4-2.
Murray State added four runs in the seventh as the Racers pushed their lead to 8-2.
Aherin would come on in the seventh as he allowed a first-pitch single but kept calm as he induced a pair of flyouts to get out of the inning.
The Skyhawks scored again in the seventh as Harford singled to shortstop and then moved up to second on a throwing error to get into scoring position. He then slid over to third on a wild pitch in time for an Albright three-bagger to center field which plated Harford and inched UT Martin closer by a score of 8-3.
Aherin made extremely quick work of the Racers in the eighth as he needed just seven pitches to get out of the frame. He worked a pair of ground balls followed by a flyout to retire the side.
Murray State was able to attack with a three-run barrage in the ninth to extend the Racer lead out to 11-3 and give the ultimate final score.
UT Martin wraps up the 2018 season tomorrow against Murray State. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to precede the contest.
