RACERS AND WEATHER DELAY TOO MUCH AS SKYHAWK BASEBALL FALLS 12-5
May 17, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad battled a weather delay as well as the Murray State Racers this evening resulting in a 12-5 loss.
UT Martin (11-39, 7-21 OVC) was led by the hot bat of Jordan Stoner (three hits and three RBIs). Ben Aslett connected for a pair of base knocks and drove in one run while Tyler Albright tallied a hit and RBI to round out the scoring column for the Skyhawks. Billy Edwards picked up a hit and worked a walk to score a pair of runs. Casey Harford tallied a hit and also scored two runs for UT Martin. The duo of Collin Edwards and Blake Davis finished up the hitting as both men picked up a base knock apiece.
Austen Bullington started for the Skyhawks and tossed 5.2 innings of work. He was tagged for four earned runs and rung up three along the way. David Hussey (1-1) was credited with the loss as he allowed four runs (none earned) in his 1.1 inning appearance. He was able to fan a pair of Racers in his time on the mound. Peyton Cain logged two full innings and struck out three batters but allowed four earned run in that span.
Murray State drew first blood as it put up two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early 2-0 advantage.
Bullington made quick work of the Racers in the second inning as he needed just 11 pitches to get out of the frame and recorded a strikeout in the process.
The Skyhawks would get on the board in the second as Billy Edwards got things started with an eight-pitch walk. Harford then singled to the shortstop and both runners moved into scoring position on a throwing error. A Stoner double down the right field line was the equalizing blow to knot things up at 2-2.
Bullington had another quick frame in the third as he tossed just eight pitches to record a perfect inning.
The Racers added a run in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
UT Martin scored two runs in the fourth as Billy Edwards led off the frame with a single through the right side. Harford would then reach on a fielder’s choice but Edwards would be safe on a throwing error. A passed ball then allowed both runners to move up a base in time for a Stoner flyout to plate Edwards. Albright then ripped a double to left center to score Harford and put the Skyhawks up by a 4-3 margin.
Bullington chugged right along in the fifth as he induced a pair of flyouts to open the frame. Working around a two-out single, he then found another friendly fly ball to get out of the inning.
Murray State would put up another run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to claim an 8-4 advantage.
The Skyhawks picked up a run in the seventh as Stoner led off with a double down the left field line. Aslett would later connect for a base knock to right field to bring home Stoner and narrow the score at 8-5.
A lightning delay in the eighth gave Murray State a breather to come back out and score two runs in the eighth inning followed by two more in the ninth to push its lead out to 12-5.
The UT Martin rally came up just short as Stoner tallied a one-out single to center in the ninth but he would remain on the base paths.
The Skyhawks continue their series with Murray State tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
