EARLY DEFICIT TOO MUCH AS UTM BASEBALL FALLS 9-3 TO JACKSONVILLE STATE
May 11, 2018
OXFORD, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team found itself down early and was unable to bounce back in the 9-3 loss to Jacksonville State.
UT Martin (10-36, 6-19 OVC) was led by Ethan Whitley (one hit, one home run and one RBI) and Blake Davis (one RBI). Tyler Albright was a perfect 4-for-4 on the evening as he connected for a double and scored a run. Collin Edwards banged out a pair of hits while Jordan Stoner, Ben Aslett and Casey Harford all tallied a base knock apiece.
Dom Bazzani (3-5) got the start but only lasted 0.1 inning as he allowed four earned runs in his time on the mound. Austen Bullington logged seven full innings of relief for the Skyhawks. Bullington gave up just two earned runs but fanned eight batters along the way. Jefferey O’Doherty finished out the game for the remaining 0.2 inning and did not allow any runs to cross the plate while also sitting down both outs via the strikeout.
Jacksonville State would jump out to an early 7-0 lead in the first inning. Bullington would come on to sit down both of his outs in the first on strikes.
UT Martin answered with a run in the second as Whitley belted a home run to left field to edge back at 7-1.
Bullington kept chugging along as he retired the first and last batters of the Jacksonville State second inning via the strikeout with a flyout sandwiched in between.
The Gamecocks found another run in the third inning to push their lead out to 8-1.
Bullington made quick work of the fourth and fifth innings as he needed just 20 pitches for both of the frames.
The Skyhawks put up another run in the sixth as Albright led off the inning with a single to left field. An Aslett base knock was good enough to move Albright to third and Aslett moved up to second base on the throw. Davis would then groundout but plate Albright to narrow the score at 8-2.
Bullington worked around a two-out error to fan the last batter of the sixth to get out of the inning unscathed. He sat down the first man he saw in the seventh with a strikeout before issuing a single followed by a walk. Bullington kept his composure to force a pair of friendly fly balls to get out of the frame.
UT Martin scored their final run of the ballgame in the eighth inning as Stoner led off the frame with a first-pitch single to right field. He would later advance to second base on a wild pitch just in time for an Albright base knock to put runners at the corners. Aslett grounded into a double play but Stoner was able to cross the plate to give the score of 8-3.
Jacksonville State plated their final run of the game in the eighth to give the eventual final score of 9-3.
The Skyhawks return to action tomorrow against Jacksonville State as Winston Cannon is set to toe the rubber. First pitch from Choccolocco Park is set for 3 p.m.
