BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the fifth consecutive season and sixth time in the last seven years, the University of Tennessee at Martin has earned the Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Award for the sport of men’s golf.
Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans.
The 2017-18 school year marks the 13th year the team sportsmanship awards have been awarded. The Skyhawk golf program, who has brought home the honor in 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, joins Jacksonville State softball as the only OVC programs to win the Team Sportsmanship Award in at least six different seasons.
“Our golf team appreciates this award voted by the teams and coaches,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We strive to represent our team, booster club supporters, community and UT Martin Athletics to the highest standards each time we participate in collegiate golf. I hold our players to a high standard and sportsmanship is something that we discuss throughout the year. We respect our opponents and sportsmanship is earned every time we play. Our players make this award possible for UT Martin.”
The Skyhawks finished in the top-two in seven of their 13 tournaments in 2017-18, including four team victories. UT Martin produced two of the 11 All-OVC honorees, including back-to-back Player of the Year Hunter Richardson and All-Newcomer Nick Wolf.
