SKYHAWK SOFTBALL FALLS SHORT AGAINST EASTERN ILLINOIS TO CLOSE OUT SEASON
May 10, 2018
OXFORD, Ala. – The seventh seeded University of Tennessee at Martin softball team posted a valiant comeback attempt but saw its season come to a close on the second day of the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship with a 3-2 setback to sixth seeded Eastern Illinois on Thursday afternoon. The Skyhawks close out their season with an overall record of 25-32.
The Skyhawks fell behind early in the contest before scoring two runs in the late innings to trim the margin to one. UT Martin would nearly see the margin become tied but unfortunate circumstances saw the decision reflect a 3-2 defeat.
Four different Skyhawks tallied base hits on the afternoon by Lauren Myers, Aeron Smith, Alli Fulcher and Alicia Hansen. The team’s lone RBI came on a single through the left side off the bat of Hansen to score Fulcher on the play.
UT Martin saw a pair of pitcher get the ball in the circle with Caitlin Karo (16-11) getting the start. Karo lasted just two innings, allowing one earned run. Hannah Ridolfi pitched the game’s final four innings, notching shutouts in each frame.
Eastern Illinois (35-19) advanced in the consolation bracket behind a big first inning. The duo of Poulter and Mitchell both tallied singles while the first run of the contest came home on a throwing error to score a run and move Mitchell over to third base. From there the Panthers added another run off a fielder’s choice to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Panthers scored their final run of the contest in the bottom of the third. An error and a single saw the first two runners reach base before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk later loaded the bases before a five-pitch walk brought home the third run to score.
UT Martin began its comeback attempt in the top of the fifth inning as Fulcher led off the frame with a single to center. As the junior moved into score position, Hansen would work the count before singling to left field to put the Skyhawks on the board. Drama hit later in the frame when a dropped third strike brought the second runner home to score but the run was later removed despite an appeal.
With the team still trailing by two runs, Myers scored the Skyhawks’ second run on a wild pitch to cut the margin to one. UT Martin would later put another run in scoring position but could not find the tying run, ultimately falling 3-2.
