MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball heads to Oxford, Ala. to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a critical conference series. The series kicks off on Friday, May 11 at 6:30. The Saturday, May 12 matchup will begin at 3 p.m. and will wrap up on Sunday, May 13 at 1 p.m.
UT Martin is led by the bat of Jordan Stoner who leads all Skyhawks in batting average (.383), on base percentage (.472) and slugging percentage (.557). The junior outfielder has swiped a team-best 10 bases on the season and tallied a squad-high four triples while also pounding out three home runs to go along with 19 RBIs. Ben Aslett has also been a key player for the UT Martin lineup as he boasts a .318 batting average and .860 OPS. Ethan Whitley leads the squad in home runs (eight) and RBIs (30).
In conference play alone, the aforementioned trio have carried the team. In league action, Stoner sports a red-hot .427 batting average and 1.132 OPS. Aslett has swung to the tune of a .354 average and knocked four home runs and driven in 17 runners. Whitley has given the Skyhawks great at-bats in conference play as the freshman touts a .341 batting average, has smacked five home runs and tallied 23 RBIs.
UT Martin will look to left handed pitcher Dom Bazzani (3-4, 9.25 ERA) for the Friday start. Righty Winston Cannon (1-7, 8.20 ERA) is slated to start on Saturday while the Sunday starter has yet to be determined. David Hussey (1-0, 5.59 ERA) and Peyton Cain (0-4, 5.88 ERA) have given the Skyhawks valuable innings of relief out of the UT Martin bullpen.
Jacksonville State is led by Nic Gaddis (.327 batting average, eight home runs and 47 RBIs). The trio of Clayton Daniel, Andrew Naismith and Taylor Hawthorne have all eclipsed the .300 mark on the year.
The Gamecocks will see righty Garrett Farmer (5-2, 4.41 ERA) on Friday night. Left handed pitcher Derrick Adams (4-2, 5.01 ERA) will draw the start on Saturday with Sunday’s starter to be determined. Christian Edwards (3-1, 1.46 ERA) has been lights-out for Jacksonville State as he has rung up 38 batters over 24.2 innings.
