UT MARTIN SOFTBALL DROPS OPENER OF OVC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TO AUSTIN PEAY 2-0
May 9, 2018
OXFORD, Ala. – The No. 7 seeded University of Tennessee at Martin softball team could not overcome a stingy pitching performance from the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year in the opening game of the OVC Softball Championships, falling to No. 2 seed Austin Peay 2-0.
The Skyhawks (25-31) tallied three base hits on the day but were kept out of the scoring column against OVC Pitcher of the Year Morgan Rackel who tallied her seventh shutout of the season and second against the Skyhawks. The trio of Lauren Myers, Alli Fulcher and Savannah Dodson would each tally base knocks on the day while Veronica Pezzoni and Alicia Hansen also reached base on walks.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ridolfi saw her record drop to 9-19 on the season despite a strong performance. Ridolfi allowed just one earned run on the afternoon in her 17th complete game.
Austin Peay (37-15) compiled its damage in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff single by Kacy Acree started the game followed by another single up the middle by Bailey Shorter on the following at bat. With a pair of runners in scoring position, a groundout brought the first run home to score while an error on the same play scored a second run.
The Skyhawks would post its best scoring chance in the top of the second inning as Gracyn McBride led off the inning by reaching on an error. An infield single by Fulcher and a 11-pitch walk by Hansen loaded the bases with two outs but the opportunity would be spoiled with a simple groundout.
Both teams combined for just five hits over the final five innings of play but the Skyhawks would not be able to push across a scoring chance, falling 2-0.
UT Martin will now test its luck in the consolation bracket, fighting for its season-life with a matchup against No. 6 seed Eastern Illinois on Thursday, May 10. First pitch from Choccolocco Park is scheduled for 10 a.m.
