MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team is set to host OVC opponent Eastern Illinois for a three-game set. First pitch on Friday, May 4 is slated for 4 p.m. while Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday’s matchup will kick off at 1 p.m.
UT Martin (9-32, 5-16 OVC) is led by Jordan Stoner (.365 batting average, three home runs and 14 RBIs). The junior outfielder ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in several categories. He ranks first in triples (three), seventh in hits per game (1.49) and ninth in total batting average (.365). In conference play alone, he also boasts several top-10 numbers, ranking tied for first in triples (two) along with teammates Billy and Collin Edwards, tied for fifth in hits (37), tied for sixth in batting average (.407) and tied for eighth in total bases (58).
Ben Aslett (.293 batting average) and Ethan Whitley (.278 batting average and team-best eight home runs and 30 RBIs) have both hit over the .300 mark in league action, sporting a .319 and .346 average, respectively.
The UT Martin pitching rotation will feature left handed pitcher Dom Bazzani (3-3, 8.82 ERA) on Friday and righty Winston Cannon (1-7, 9.29 ERA) on Saturday with Sunday’s starter to be determined. The Skyhawk bullpen is led by David Hussey (0-0, 4.97 ERA), Peyton Cain (0-4, 5.10 ERA and two saves) and Konnor Aherin (2-2, 6.16 ERA and one save).
Hussey is coming off of a game in which he tossed 1.2 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just two hits and rung up one batter last Saturday against Austin Peay. Cain logged two scoreless outings as he threw for a total of seven innings, allowed just five hits and one walk while sitting down five batsmen on strikes.
Eastern Illinois (16-27, 5-16 OVC) is led by the big bats of Hunter Morris (.299 batting average, 11 home runs and 44 RBIs) and Dougie Parks (.299 batting average, 12 home runs and 35 RBIs). Ryan Knernschield (.322 batting average, one homer and eight RBIs) and Josh Turnock (.322 batting average, one home run and 12 RBIs) have also provided high marks.
The Panthers will turn to the arms of right handed pitcher Tyler Jones (4-3, 2.65 ERA) on Friday, righty Alex Stevenson (2-7, 6.58 ERA) on Saturday and right handed pitcher Spenser Dexter (0-1, 6.62 ERA) on Sunday. Michael Starcevich (1-1, 2.85 ERA and six saves) has been a shutdown arm out of the bullpen.
