MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads tallied three school records in an impressive showing at the Memphis Tiger Invitational over the weekend.

The Skyhawks shifted their focus to the relay events in their final tune-up before the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track Championship on May 10-12 in Oxford, Ala. With the added focus, the Skyhawks set three new program records in a loaded field of competitors.

In the men’s 4x100m, the four-some of Josiah Smith, Porter Streator III, Kewan Slaton and Jarod Lawson set a new school record with a time of 42.5 seconds, to surpass the previous mark set in 2017. Another record fell in the men’s 4x400m as Smith, Leonel Perez, Slaton and Jonathan Conley posted a record-setting time of 3:19.01 – besting a mark set in 1999.

On the women’s side, the 4x400m relay squad of Maya Brown, Kara Martin, Jasmyn Pilcher and Agok Ayuen posted one of the best times in school history with a time of 4:03.73.

In the individual ranks, Slaton tallied his third piece of a school record in the meet, posting a time of 49.51 in the men’s 400m to narrowly surpass his teammates previous benchmark set earlier this season. Freshman Darin Donnell also posted a strong PR in the 400m at 51.81.

The women’s 400m saw Pilcher post a new PR in the event with a time of 58.76 seconds. She later came back with another PR in the 100m with a time of 12.39 seconds. Moving onto the women’s 800m, Perez posted yet another PR with a time of 1:52.77 to finish third overall.

In mid-distance events, sophomore Natalie Motor posted a new PR in the women’s 1500m with a time of 5:07.03. Rounding out the team’s highlights was the unofficial performance of sophomore Austin Rogers in the men’s 3k steeplechase. Rogers posted a dazzling performance with an unverified time of 9:13.0 in the event as a technicality outside the athlete’s control scratched the event from the official results.

“Teamwork was the overarching theme throughout this weekend’s meet,” UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. “The sacrifice by individuals, for the success of the team, really came through in the numerous relay records.”

UT Martin will return to action at the OVC Outdoor Track Championships hosted by Tennessee Tech beginning on Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12.
