RALLY COMES UP SHORT AS UTM BASEBALL FALLS 10-4 TO AUSTIN PEAY IN SERIES FINALE
April 29, 2018
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped the series finale against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay by a 10-4 margin this afternoon.
UT Martin (9-32, 5-16 OVC) was led by Ethan Whitley (two hits, one double and one RBI). Casey Harford collected a hit and an RBI while Billy drove in the remaining Skyhawk RBI. Carson Shrode and Collin Edwards put up a multiple-hit day as both outfielders had a pair of base knocks. Jordan Stoner and Blake Davis each got on base via the walk in the outing.
Austen Bullington (1-3) got the starting nod for UT Martin and tossed just two innings while conceding eight earned runs. He did manage to fan one Governor in his time on the mound. Sam Folks followed Bullington with a pair of innings and allowed no earned runs while striking out one along the way. Peyton Cain pitched a solid four full innings to close out the ballgame. He did not allow a run to cross home plate and gave up just three hits while issuing one walk. Cain would ring up four Austin Peay batters in his appearance.
The Governors scored all 10 runs in the first four innings. They put up three in the first, two in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to take the commanding 10-0 lead.
Cain entered the game in the fifth and got to work quickly as he fanned the first batter he faced then forced a one-pitch lineout. He ended the frame on a three-pitch strikeout. Cain kept up the good work as he sat down the first Governor of the sixth on strikes followed by a groundout. He kept a cool head as he then conceded a single and walk before ending the inning on a fielder’s choice.
The Skyhawks battled back in the seventh as Davis got things started with a six-pitch walk followed by a Collin Edwards single through the left side to put me on first and second. Whitley then belted a double to right field to bring in Davis and put runners at the corners. A Harford single up the middle followed by a two-base error brought in both Edwards and Whitley, leaving Harford at third base. Billy Edwards then lined out to right field for the sacrifice which plated Harford and put UT Martin back in the ballgame with the score of 10-4 although the Skyhawk rally would come up just short.
Cain made fairly quick work of the seventh as he forced a two-pitch groundout followed by a single. He then had some help from backstop Davis as he gunned down the runner attempting to swipe second. He wrapped up the frame on a lineout. Cain got a groundout and flyout to start the eighth then allowed a single before ringing up the last batter he faced.
UT Martin returns to action on May 4-6 as the Skyhawks host OVC opponent Eastern Illinois. First pitch from Skyhawk Field is scheduled at 6 p.m.
