MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team heads to OVC foe Austin Peay for a weekend series against the Governors. The Skyhawks are coming off of a weekend in which they claimed their first conference series of the season as they took two-out-of-three from SIUE. UT Martin is also coming off of a midweek victory over in-state opponent Christian Brothers.
The series is scheduled to kick off on Friday, April 27 at 6 p.m. The Saturday, April 28 start is slated for 4 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday, April 29 set for 1 p.m. All games will be streamed free of charge on the OVC Digital Network.
The Skyhawks (8-30, 4-14 OVC) are led by the red-hot bat of Jordan Stoner (.365 batting average, three triple, three home runs and 14 RBIs). The outfielder is in the top-10 in conference play in a total of seven categories. Along with teammates Billy and Collin Edwards, he ranks first in triples (2) as all three have claimed a pair of three-baggers on the season. In league action, Stoner ranks fifth in batting average (.413), fifth in slugging percentage (.675), fifth in total hits (33), sixth in total bases (54), ninth in doubles (eight) and 10th in on base percentage (.460).
Ethan Whitley’s five homers in league play are good for seventh. The freshman has belted a team-high of eight on the season to go along with a squad-best 28 RBIs.
The UT Martin rotation will feature left-handed pitcher Dom Bazzani (2-3, 8.78 ERA) on Friday night. Righty Winston Cannon (1-6, 9.00 ERA) will toe the rubber on Saturday while the Sunday starter is TBA. Relievers David Hussey (0-0, 5.32 ERA), Peyton Cain (0-4, 5.98 ERA) and Konnor Aherin (2-2, 6.16 ERA) look to be the key pieces to the Skyhawk bullpen. Both Cain and Aherin have tallied one save apiece on the season.
Austin Peay (23-18, 13-8 OVC) is led by free-swinging Parker Phillips (.326 batting average, 11 home runs and 45 RBIs). The Governors also look to get production out of Garrett Giovanelli (.366 batting average, three home runs and 23 RBIs), Garrett Kueber (.364 batting average, two home runs and 31 RBIs) and Nick Walker (.316 batting average, seven home runs and 30 RBIs).
The Austin Peay rotation will see left-handed pitcher Michael Costanzo (7-1, 4.13 ERA) getting the start on Friday. Southpaw Jacques Pucheu (5-1, 4.88 ERA) will take the mound on Saturday. Sunday’s starter will be right-handed pitcher Brandon Vial (1-2, 5.93 ERA). Reliever Brett Newberg (3-1, 3.44 ERA) has been a vital member of the bullpen as he has racked up five saves on the year.
