RICHARDSON REPEATS AS PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS UT MARTIN GOLF NABS FOUR OVC AWARDS
April 23, 2018
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – For the second straight year, University of Tennessee at Martin golf standout Hunter Richardson was crowned as the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year while Nick Wolf collected a pair of awards at the league’s banquet ceremony this evening.
In addition to his Player of the Year award, Richardson was also named to the 11-man All-OVC team for the fourth time in his storied career. Joining him on the All-OVC squad was Wolf, who also earned a spot on the five-man All-OVC Newcomer squad.
“I am thrilled for both Hunter and Nick,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “For Hunter to make all-conference all four years is quite an accomplishment. He leads by example on an off the golf course and will go down as the best player in the history of this program. Nick is a special young man that has a bright future for us – he got better as the season progressed and his improvement bodes well for him going forward. It says a lot for the coaches to vote a freshman on to the All-OVC team.”
Richardson is the eighth golfer in OVC history to win the Player of the Year award on multiple occasions while he is also only the sixth player ever to earn All-OVC accolades in all four seasons. He ranks atop the league with a 70.4 scoring average, which is more than two strokes ahead of second place. He was named adidas OVC Player of the Week six times out of 15 weeks during his senior campaign.
The Clarksville, Tenn. native has played 25 of his 33 rounds at under par or par, carding eight eagles and 137 birdies during the 2017-18 campaign. Richardson won four tournaments (Murray State Invitational, Memphis Intercollegiate, Samford Intercollegiate and Grover Page Classic) while placing in the top-five in nine of his 11 tournaments. His season-best round of 64 came in the second round of the aforementioned Murray State Invitational on Sept. 11.
A Murfreesboro, Tenn. native, Wolf is just the ninth Skyhawk to bring home All-OVC Newcomer accolades and is only the second UT Martin freshman (alongside Richardson) to garner All-OVC status. He ranks 10th in the OVC with a 73.4 scoring average and has played 11 of his team-high 35 rounds this season at or below par. Of those 35 rounds, his score was factored into the Skyhawk lineup in all but one instance.
Wolf accumulated a pair of eagles and 100 birdies in 2017-18, leading the team with a .756 fairways hit percentage. He racked up six top-20 finishes on the season, including a career-best second-place effort out of 77 participants (213, E) at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 9-10. His low round of 67 came in the opening round of the Loyola Intercollegiate on Feb. 25.
