MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team avoided Mother Nature today at the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Championships as the team ranks fifth in the field of 11 teams at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
After a 90-minute weather and lightning delay started off the day, the Skyhawks compiled a 296 (+8) as a team and are tied with SIUE and Eastern Kentucky in the standings. UT Martin is tied for the tournament lead in par-5 scoring (4.90, -2) as the team combined for 12 birdies today. Jacksonville State (286, -2) was the only team to shoot under par as a team to take the lead after 18 of 54 holes.
“Given the weather and the conditions, it wasn’t a bad start,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We had a couple of double bogeys and that hurt our score but at the same time, we had some players that stepped up today and gave us a good score. I’m proud of my guys and the way they played today. We are still in the championship hunt and if we have a good round tomorrow, we can put ourselves in position to make a move in the final round.”
Hunter Richardson shot an even-par 72 to lead UT Martin today, as both of his birdies came in the first three holes on the back-nine. The two-time defending medalist is tied for eighth out of 55 participants after leading the team in par-4 scoring (3.90, -1) and pars (14).
Jack Story also added a pair of birdies today to go along with 13 pars for a 73 (+1), which ranks 15th in the field. The sophomore out of Dickson, Tenn. leads the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.50, -2) while also pacing the team in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) today.
Posting a team-high four birdies today was Nick Wolf, who accounted for a 75 (+3) this afternoon. Tate Chumley was the final scorer for the Skyhawks today, as he played even-par through 12 holes before finishing with a 76 (+4). Ross Redmont played at even-par over the final 10 holes today and completed his round with a 79 (+7).
UT Martin is paired with Tennessee Tech and SIUE for Round 2 tomorrow. Redmont tees off at 9:40 a.m. and will be followed by Chumley (9:50), Wolf (10:00), Story (10:10) and Richardson (10:20).
