RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team could not overcome one of the top challengers for the Ohio Valley Conference crown, dropping a road doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky by the final scores of 8-7 and 11-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (22-26, 6-10 OVC) could not cage the second-place Colonels on their home turf on Saturday afternoon, allowing the high-powered offense to score 19 runs on the day while hitting just .255 as a team.
Five different players tallied a pair of base hits on the day. The senior duo of Savannah Dodson and Jodie Duncan paced the Skyhawks with three RBIs on the afternoon – including Duncan’s first home run of the season. The trio of Lauren Myers, Veronica Pezzoni and Gracyn McBride would notch the team’s other RBIs.
UT Martin’s pitching staff was hit hard for 19 earned runs on the day. Caitlin Karo (14-9, 2.49 ERA) and Hannah Ridolfi (8-14, 2.62 ERA) were both hit with losses in the pair of games, allowing eight runs each.
Game 1: Eastern Kentucky 8, UT Martin 7
UT Martin would strike first in the opening contest, scoring a run on a RBI double by McBride to score Duncan in the top of the first.
Eastern Kentucky responded quickly, not only eliminating the deficit, but scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. The Colonels would do their damage with RBI singles by Hannah Clark, Zoe Mihalicz and Carly Robinson.
The Skyhawks looked to chip away in the top of the second inning. Freshman Paige Clark led off the inning with a single to center before later coming home to score by fellow classmate Pezzoni on a double to left center.
With the game at a three-run margin, the Colonels added another pair of runs in the bottom of the third. EKU saw a pair of runner reach scoring position before coming home on a two-run single to center by Brooke Harrison to make it a 7-2 contest.
UT Martin scored three runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded with two outs, Dodson would come through in the clutch by legging out a three-run triple to right center to cut the margin down to just two.
After the Colonels added another insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Johnkyria Alston, UT Martin need a large comeback attempt. Trailing by three runs, the Skyhawks would tally three consecutive base hits to load the bases. UT Martin would plate a pair of runs in the inning to trim the deficit to just one on RBIs from Myers and Duncan, but the Skyhawks would ultimately fall 8-7.
Game 2: Eastern Kentucky 11, UT Martin 2 (Six Innings)
The Skyhawks hoped to get the game started on the right foot in Game Two. A leadoff walk was later punctuated by a two-run home run to right field, giving UT Martin a two-run lead in the top of the first.
Much like the Skyhawks, the Colonels then tied the game up with one swing of the bat as Paige Murphy belted a two-run home run of her own to left field in the bottom of the first.
With the game back squared up at two runs, it was all EKU from here. The Colonels added a run in the second inning before exploding for five runs in the fifth. Home runs by both Destinee Lizzmore and Robinson highlighted the big inning.
Holding a six-run advantage, Eastern Kentucky put the game away in the bottom of the sixth on a game-clinching three-run home run by Murphy to enact the mercy rule and seal the 11-2 victory.
UT Martin will return to action with a doubleheader at Morehead State on Sunday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT.
