MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf program will go for its second league championship in three seasons next week when it competes in the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Championship.

This year’s edition of the tournament takes place on April 23-25 and will once again be held at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. This marks the fifth consecutive season and sixth overall occasion that the league championship has been held on the Fighting Joe Course, which is a par-72 course playing at 7,258 yards.

UT Martin will look to continue its recent OVC Championship success, as the Skyhawks seized their first-ever OVC golf championship on the same course in 2016. UT Martin has also produced the medalist in three consecutive OVC tournaments, starting with Brendon Caballero in 2015 before Hunter Richardson has claimed each of the last two individual championships. The Skyhawks will look to become just the second school to generate a medalist in four straight years, joining Eastern Kentucky from 1982-86.

This season, UT Martin has compiled four tournament victories while finishing as runner-up on three different occasions. The Skyhawks rank second in the OVC with a 290.9 scoring average, trailing only SIUE (290.7).

Richardson will occupy the No. 1 spot in UT Martin’s lineup at the OVC Championship. The defending OVC Golfer of the Year and three-time All-OVC honoree will try to join former Middle Tennessee standout Brett Alexander (1998-2000) as the only players to ever win three straight OVC Tournaments. Richardson’s 70.4 scoring average leads the OVC by two full strokes as he has posted four tournament victories during his senior campaign.

Joining Richardson in the Skyhawk lineup is four underclassmen in redshirt sophomore Ross Redmont (No. 2), freshman Nick Wolf (No. 3), sophomore Jack Story (No. 4) and freshman Tate Chumley (No. 5). Of those four, Story is the only UT Martin representative with OVC Championship experience as he helped the Skyhawks finish fourth in the team standings in 2017.

Redmont ranks seventh in the OVC in scoring average (73.1) as he boasts four top-10 tournament finishes in 2017-18. Wolf ranks 10th in the conference with a 73.4 stroke average and is coming off the best finish of his young collegiate career – a second-place finish at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 9-10. Story has tallied four top-10 finishes on his way to a 74.5 scoring average this season. Moving into the No. 5 slot is Chumley, who has collected a 75.0 stroke average in his debut season at UT Martin.
