UT MARTIN ADVANCES TO EQUITATION OVER FENCES QUARTERFINALS OF NCEA CHAMPIONSHIPS

WACO, Texas – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team rounded out a busy opening day at the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championships with a first-round equitation over fences victory over No. 9 Fresno State at the Extraco Events Center.

Seeded No. 8 in the equitation over fences bracket, the Skyhawks tied Fresno State by a 2-2 margin but earned the right to advance after winning the raw points tiebreaker, 635-597. UT Martin received victories out of Monika Zoromski (164 points) and Brooke Pfeiffer (161 points) as the duo combined to defeat their opponents by 56 points. Lindsay Anderson (156) and Abbie Hopkins (154) also represented the Skyhawks but were narrowly edged out.

UT Martin was ranked No. 8 in the equitation on the flat bracket and was also matched up against No. 9 Fresno State in the first round but fell by a 3-1 margin. Anderson came away with the Skyhawks’ lone victory in the event, securing 138 points. Quinn Reed (153), Hopkins (147) and Zoromski (133) additionally competed before coming up just short for UT Martin.

The Skyhawks were seeded No. 10 in horsemanship and took on No. 7 SMU in the opening round, falling 3-1. Bobbie Piddock pulled away with a head-to-head win thanks to a 138-point effort while the other three decisions were decided by seven points or less. Lucy Eier managed 146.5 points but narrowly fell by 2.5 points while Devon Woods earned 144.5 points and was barely edged out by three points. Bailey Newlin (140 points) rounded out UT Martin’s participants in the event.

In reining, the No. 11 Skyhawks were pitted against No. 6 Baylor in the first round as the host Bears eked out a slim 2-1 win. Madeline Williams managed a victory with 141.5 points while Liana Nowak equaled her competitor with an identical score of 140.5 points. The remaining two matchups were decided by three points or less, as Hannah McDonald (140.5 points) and Noel Meadows (138 points) each posted solid performances for UT Martin.

The Skyhawks continue their run towards an equitation over fences national championship when UT Martin takes on No. 1 seed Texas A&M, who received an automatic bye into the event quarterfinals. That matchup is set for Friday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m.
