MARTIN, Tenn. – For the 25th time in the last 26 years, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad will make an appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament as the sixth-seeded Skyhawks take on No. 3 Austin Peay in the first round at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, April 20.

For the fourth straight year, the OVC Tournament is being held at the Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. Admission is free during each of the three days of the tournament, as the semifinals are set for Saturday, April 21 before the championship round on Sunday, April 22.

UT Martin is 25-22 all-time in the OVC Tournament, including an 18-9 mark against the 2018 field which also includes No. 1 Eastern Kentucky, No. 2 Murray State, No. 4 Jacksonville State and No. 5 Eastern Illinois.

The Skyhawks own a 3-0 all-time OVC Tournament record against Austin Peay, defeating the Governors in 2002 (4-0), 2001 (4-1) and 1999 (5-1). UT Martin is 27-5 all-time against Austin Peay but will look to avenge a 5-2 home loss to the Governors on March 31. In that match, the Skyhawks won the doubles point behind the duos of Asel Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter (6-0 at No. 1) and Andrea Plantada/Amelia Campbell (6-0 at No. 3). Mizuki Sakurai also added a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 singles.

Four Skyhawks have extensive experience in the OVC Tournament, as they have combined for seven career victories in the postseason. Potter boasts a 4-2 combined record (including a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles play) while Jumamukhambetova, Plantada and Elina Geut have each tallied wins in the OVC Tournament.

UT Martin recovered from an 0-10 start to its spring season to finish at 4-13 overall and 4-5 in the OVC ranks. The Skyhawks have won the doubles point in five consecutive matches and are 14-7 overall in doubles against league competition.

On the season, Jumamukhambetova and Potter each boast a team-best 12 doubles victories while Jumamukhambetova has dialed up a team-high nine singles wins. In conference play, the doubles teams of Jumamukhambetova/Potter (No. 1) and Campbell/Plantada (No. 3) have each earned a 6-2 record while Potter leads the way with five singles wins – all coming at No. 2.

Austin Peay enters the tournament with a 10-8 overall record and a 6-3 mark in OVC play. Lidia Yanes Garcia paces the Governors in singles with a 24-6 overall record, including an 8-1 slate against league opposition. She also boasts a team-best 16 doubles victories while freshman Fabienne Schmidt ranks second on the squad in both singles wins (20) and doubles victories (14).
