CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team posted a strong showing against Ohio Valley Conference play, limiting Southeast Missouri to just one run on the day before ultimately splitting the road doubleheader by final scores of 4-0 and 1-0.
The Skyhawks (22-24, 6-8 OVC) tallied 15 hits on the day to secure a strong victory in Game One before being held scoreless in eight innings of play against the Redhawks in the second half of the doubleheader. Senior Jodie Duncan and junior Lauren Myers tallied four base hits each to lead the Skyhawks while the junior pair of Gracyn McBride and Alli Fulcher notched a pair. With the abundance of hits, McBride paced the team with three RBIs while Alicia Hansen notched the team’s other RBI.
Freshman Caitlin Karo (14-8, 2.20 ERA) notched her third shutout of the season. Karo would strike out six while issuing just one walk in seven innings of work to seal her 14th win of the season. Hannah Ridolfi (8-13, 2.32 ERA) was hit with the tough decision, posting a strong performance with seven strikeouts and just one earned run in 7.1 innings of work.
Game 1: UT Martin 4, Southeast Missouri 0
UT Martin wasted little time getting on the board to start the game, scoring in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Myers and Duncan set up a RBI opportunity for McBride who came through in the clutch, knocking a double into right center to give the squad a 1-0 lead.
The game would remain a one-run contest until the top of the sixth inning. Fulcher got the inning started with a leadoff single before being relieved by pinch runner Halie Fain. The speedster would quickly swipe second to move into scoring position before advancing to third later in the frame. With the runner just 60-feet away, Hansen would leg out an infield single which plated the run to make it a two-run game.
The Skyhawks looked to add some additional insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back singles and steals by Veronica Pezzoni and Myers, respectively, got the rally started before a walk to Duncan loaded the bases. With another prime scoring opportunity at hand, McBride singled to center to score a pair of runs and help secure the team’s 4-0 victory.
Game 2: Southeast Missouri 1, UT Martin 0 (Eight innings)
The second game of the day would be a pitcher’s duel throughout. The pitching duo of Haley Thogmartin and Rachel Rook would be suffocating for the Skyhawk offense, limiting the team to just four hits in the contest.
Ridolfi would be equally as impressive, holding the powerful Redhawks in check heading into extra innings.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, SEMO looked for the game-winner. Mykaela Arellanes would get the frame started with a double to center field to put a runner in scoring position setting up her teammate for the heroics. Needing just one more hit to score the runner from second, Parker Bandy would get just that, notching a single to center to tally the extra-inning walk-off victory.
UT Martin will return to action with a pair of OVC doubleheaders at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State this weekend.
