SKYHAWK TRACK GARNERS WINS AND PERSONAL BESTS AT GOVS INVITE

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squad competed at the Austin Peay Invitational, tallying a pair of event victories in the meet.
Leading the way with event victories was junior Leonel Perez and freshman Timothy Dye. Perez led by the field of 47 competitors in the men’s 1500m run from gun to tape with a time of 3:53.58. Then in the 3000m men’s steeplechase, Dye posted an impressive sub-10-minute time with a finish of 9:56.4 to win event.
Sprinter Maya Brown posted a new PR in the women’s 100m dash with a time of 12.57 to pace the squad. In the men’s 100m event, freshman Josiah Smith notched a season-best time of 10.93 second while Jarod Lawson trailed at 11.21.
The women’s relay events were also a bright spot for the Skyhawks specifically in the 4x100m and 4x400m events. The Skyhawks 4x100m team finished third with a time of 48.71 seconds while the 4x400m group finished second at 4:06.41.
Also in the 1500m run, freshman Lenny Baumann posted a new PR with a time of 4:14.89. In the women’s 1500m, sophomore Nelly Kandie posted a new PR with a time of 4:58.5 while classmate Natalie Motor also notched a PR of her own at 5:08.51.
In the women’s 800m, sophomore standout Kara Martin just missed out on an individual title, finishing as the event runner-up with a time of 2:16.75. Senior Kiana Hope also was impressive on the day, notching a strong time of 2:30.25. On the men’s side of the 800m, Jonathan Conley also finished as a runner-up with a time of 1:53.73 while Austin Rogers notched a PR with great speed work to finish sixth with a time of 1:57.13. Jhon-Wes Walker wasn’t far behind with a finish of 1:58.37 while Kewan Slaton crossed at 1:59.08.
“The team continues to make strides in all areas,” UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. “The sprints crew just keeps getting better and better while the mid-distance athletes really competed so strong today. As we enter the final phase of the season, there’s no double this group will be ready for the championships.”
UT Martin will return to action with representative competing at the at the Brian Clay Invite on Thursday, Apr. 19, the Mount Sac Relays on Friday, Apr. 20 and the ASU Red Wolf Open on Sunday, Apr. 22.
