April 12, 2018
MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin softball coach Donley Canary has announced the addition of Kenna Garst (Petersburg, Mich.) and Chayse Skinner (Spring Hill, Fla.) to the program’s 2018 recruiting class.
“Both of these late additions to the Skyhawk signing class really enhance it,” Canary said. “We are very fortunate to get both of these talented players. Both have ability that can play in this league and increases the overall value of the class.”
Kenna Garst – C/OF, 5-3, R/R, Fr., Petersburg, Mich. (St. Mary’s Catholic Central HS)
Garst joins the Skyhawks from St. Mary’s Catholic Central where she plays for head coach John Morningstar. She is a 5-3 catcher that helped lead her team to back-to-back Division III state championships while being selected as an all-state first-team performer in 2017. During her junior campaign she posted a .394 batting average with 13 doubles, eight home runs and 40 RBIs. Was ranked as the No. 10 overall prospect in the state of Michigan as a junior. She also received all-district first team honors three times along with a pair of all-region selections.
“Kenna is a player that will be able to come in and challenge for the role of starting catcher or outfield right away,” Canary said. “She is a versatile athlete that can play any position on the field – except for pitcher or first base. She shows tremendous hustle in everything she does and is a real spark plug. We can’t wait to see the type of energy she will bring to the team.”
Chayse Skinner – OF, 5-10, S/R, Fr., Spring Hill, Fla. (Nature Coast Tech HS)
Skinner joins the Skyhawks from Nature Coast Tech High School where she plays for head coach Jug Olmstead. She is a 5-10 outfielder who has posted a career batting average over .360 along with an on-base percentage of .415 throughout her prep career. For her decorated career, she has posted a .362 batting average, 28 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 66 RBIs along with 21 stolen bases.
“Chayse is an outstanding athlete will incredible ability,” Canary said. “She has the skill to compete for playing time in both the outfield and first base next year. We believe that her terrific power potential will translate nicely into our lineup right away.”
The tandem joins a decorated 2018 signing class which features the likes of Erin Gallagher (Suwanee, Ga.), Chelsey Gore (Lexington, Tenn.), Georgia Land (Ethridge, Tenn.), Kallie Pickens (Jackson, Tenn.) and Alexis Ray (Louisville, Ky.) which each signed during the early signing period in November.
